Raising funds for Alzheimers NZ. In honour of my beautiful Mum who is going through this bewildering journey with dignity and grace.
Nationwide
2020 has already been a year to remember (or forget); a year of chaos and loss for many. A year of transformation and change for others. The bringing together of a Nation, yet isolation and disconnection for our most vulnerable.
A time made especially difficult for people with Alzheimers or dementia. How can one 'make memories' when short term memory has gone? How does one stay 'connected' when brain neurons are dying at a disconcerting rate?
As our population ages, dementia is becoming a major cause of death for our eldest citizens. More research is needed to understand this terminal disease; more support is needed to provide Alzheimers sufferers with a good quality of life, in a compassionate, caring community.
Early this year, I won a free entry into the Ironman NZ 2021 event in Taupo, having been a Volunteer for 6 years. This journey is taking all my strength, determination and courage. But I chose to do this, and intend to waIk on stage next year and say, "I did it!"
I would love to raise funds during my Ironman journey on behalf of all Alzheimers sufferers.
Especially in honour of my beautiful Mum.xx
Alzheimers patients and their carers deserve a good quality of life; understanding, compassion, love and laughter. I would like to dedicate my Ironman journey to all dementia sufferers, but particularly to my Mum. Kia kaha, Mum. You are so loved.xx
