George and Brendan's Longest Day 72 hole Golf Marathon
Te Anau, Southland
New Zealand Golf has laid down the challenge to golfers to try to complete 72 holes (4 full rounds) of golf over the longest day of the year. The goal is to raise money for The Cancer Society. Our goal is to raise money to directly help a local family fighting their own battle (see link). As family men themselves, this is a cause close to the boys' hearts. We hope to assist with Dan's ability to continue to receive immunotherapy treatment which is giving him precious time with his young family.
Brendan and George are social golf mates who reckon they can give the challenge a good crack. The golf might not be too flash by the end but it probably won't be at the start either.
We aim to tee off at day break on Fri 22nd December at Te Anau Golf Club. A course renowned for its relatively long and hilly layout. We expect to walk a minimum of 42km over the day dependent on how straight we play and anticipate we will need at least 12-14 solid hours of golf time. We hope to take a short lunch break if time allows.
We invite anyone to join us and support the day and will have golf carts available from the club to use. Any encouragement will be appreciated and help us keep to a decent pace.
A reserve day will be made for early January should the weather not permit our attempt on Dec 22nd.
We made it!!! 23 December 2023
Well that was a challenging but very enjoyable day. The Te Anau weather and the golf course were both glorious. We teed off at 5:55am and got through the first 36 holes by 12pm. After a lunch break the afternoon 36 holes were more challenging as the heat and fatigue set in. Some tired boys with sore feet managed to walk over 40km which was harder than swinging.
Thanks to everyone that joined us on the day, we appreciated your energy and especially thanks to all our generous donors. We are so proud of what we managed to do to help such a lovely family at an extremely challenging time.
Merry Xmas everyone.
