2014 Challenge

  • Taupo-Rotorua Flyer, April 18, 2015

      21 April 2015

Freezing cold and constant rain, but I still completed the 100 km cycle from Taupo to Rotorua. I'm sure I was near Hypothermic in the last 5km of the ride, numb fingers and feet, saturated right through, but that didn't stop me! I would do it all again.

Just completed the 200km that was the Ride to Conquer Cancer! What amazing and inspiring people at the event. Even though the weather was crappy we all had the most awesome time and have made friends for life along the way. Would do it again in a heartbeat!

Saw the Oncologist yesterday. Results of MRI are ""no residual or recurrence of disease."" I hope that remains the case for a while. Will need to have MRIs at 3 monthly intervals to check on status.

I was on TVNZ News last Sunday. The reporters were unaware it was going to be on that day, and so I was at RPM Les Mills when it was on and found out later when I got several texts from friends and my Mum. It was about my 'Year on the Bike', fundraising for The Cancer Society and Malaghan Institute, and had been organised by Arpita from Les Mills. Thank you Arpita for your ongoing support!

I went to the Orientation for the Ride to Conquer Cancer in November today, which is raising money for the Auckland Cancer Society. Margo, a Body Paint Artist I contacted through CanTalk, painted a beautiful oceanic scene up my legs and across my arms, with jumping dolphins. It is stunning!

Back from the Grape Ride. It lived up to the reputation of being one of the most stunning scenic rides on the planet! I was placed 4th Female Cancer Rider with a time of 4.45.01. The Grape crushing with Steve Gurney after was a blast too. Hope to be there next year!

April Fool's Day! Couldn't give up the opportunity to ride on such a stunning Wellington afternoon. No wind, balmy 22 degrees. My excuse was to make sure my bike was OK before I head to the Grape Ride this weekend, after finding I had a flat tyre last Saturday.

WHEW! Just finished the 2 hour RPM at Les Mills. What an awesome class put on by Team Rigby- Justine and Adam. Thanks to Arpita at Les Mills and Victoria Hale at Malaghan Institute for organising the event. I had taken the morning off riding with Gear Shifters as was feeling a bit nauseous and didn't want to push myself before tonight's class. Many thanks to all who took part!

Finally a beautiful day for cycling in Wellington, not too windy and not too hot. I am having another round of Chemo, 2nd day of 5 today, but I'm all set to take on Makara today! Up Ngaio gorge, back of J.ville and through Ohariu valley to Makara, then up Makara hill twice! On roads I've never ridden before-WOW! And I made it!

      1 March 2014

Our second ride with Gear Shifters outside and again it was extremely windy, Southerly this time. And we were doing hills! Who's gears decided to play up? Mine of course, so I held back a group to ensure I could keep up. We powered around Miramar Peninsular, up Houghton Valley Rd and down Rodrigo Rd, then up Alexandra Rd not once but twice before coming down into Oriental Bay. To those of you who don't know Wellington that's a lot of hills. There were plenty of HIGH 5's after that!

I started cycling with Gearshifters this morning. Wow, the wind was wild- 90k/hr Northerlies! So our first ride flat route around Miramar Peninsular became a hill climb up Mt Victoria. It was absolutely awesome! The people are wonderful, friendly and helpful. Can't wait for next Saturday!

Training with Gear Shifters starts this Saturday 8am. So looking forward to meeting the other riders I will ride with, or behind, in the Grape Ride event in April. Hope the weather is better than what the forecast predicts! Am still looking for a ride from Picton to Blenheim also, so will get that sorted. Thanks to all that have donated to my cause so far. Very much appreciated!

I hope the weather is better than it has been recently. I will be receiving the last month of my 6 month block of Chemo on the weekend of the ride, and I hope there will be no more!
