Harry Runs for Heart Kids - Namibia 2019

In April 2019, I am going to try to run 250km across the Namib Desert in six days with everything I need to survive on my back.

Yes, 250 kilometres, as in 250,000 metres. Yes, the Namib Desert, as in the seriously hot one in Africa. Yes, me, as in the idiot who can’t even tell the difference between still and sparkling water.

One of the coolest things about doing something mildly ridiculous like running across a desert in Africa is that you have a great opportunity to direct the attention and interest towards a worthy cause.

And for me, that means Heart Kids - a cause worth running across ten deserts for.

One in one-hundred kids born in NZ each year is a Heart Kid, meaning that they are born with a congenital heart defect. Imagine, if you can, what that must be like to go through as a new parent.

Heart Kids Wellington are intimately involved with providing support to families of Heart Kids, essentially bridging the gap between what these families desperately need, and what the health service do not always have the time or resources to provide.

The list describing what support Heart Kids Wellington offers to families of Heart Kids goes on and on, however the number of families they support grows larger and larger.

Incredibly, Heart Kids receive no government funding yet somehow still manage to support so many with so little. In a time where securing every dollar is a challenge, Heart Kids Wellington continues to provide pivotal support today with no certainty that they will be able to tomorrow.

Every single dollar that goes towards supporting Heart Kids and their families comes from the generosity of people like you, reading this now.

Over the coming months of my desert-running preparation, I have set myself a new and far more important goal to achieve – to advocate for Heart Kids Wellington loudly and proudly.
