Please help Becks secure a modified home of her own. Her current rental is being sold and she has nowhere to go.
Nelson / Tasman
My name is Rebekah Smith and I am 39 years old. As a result of having had Multiple Sclerosis I do life in a wheelchair, which brings many challenges. One of the greatest of these is in finding suitable, affordable accommodation, as I need a home with appropriate modifications for ease of access including in the bathroom
I have been in my present modified rental unit for three years however the landlord is now wishing to sell it. I am hoping of buy the unit, or another similar property should one become available. I am able to raise a reasonable deposit with my Kiwi saver and the help of friends and family. I have also recently secured part-time work and this together with income from the Supported Living wage I will be able to service a mortgage. To reach the funds required to purchase the modified home that I am currently in, or another modifiable house I need another $160,000.
I have contacted all real estate agents in the Nelson region however, it seems impossible to find anything at all suitable, let alone affordable. It is very important to me that I stay in the Nelson region where I have lived for 20 years. All my medical and social support is based here.
I have sort assistance from Work & Income, the Beneficiaries and Unwaged Workers Trust (BUWT), Nelson Housing Trust, CCS Disability Action, Housing New Zealand and Tasman District Council units which are only for those over 55 years of age.
So I am in a desperate situation. The place I am in is currently on the market and at any stage I can be given 21 days notice to leave, at this point in time I don't have anywhere to go. (The deadline sale date is 20th November).
I am a friend of Becks and want to see her enjoy the security of owning her own modified home and not to be placed in uncertainty each time she has to move from rentals.
Beck's gets to stay. 2 December 2019
Beck's gives a huge heartfelt thank you to Habitat for Humanity who has purchased her home so that she can stay in the place that she loves and needs. And thanks to your incredibly generous support the funds raised on this give-a-little page have been given to Habitat for further modifications that are needed to make Beck's home safer. Thank you all so much.
