Kia Haumaru provides safety education to girls and women across Aotearoa. It's free. It's accessible. It's life-changing.
Nationwide
Kia Haumaru's vision is for a safe and respectful society free from violence. We believe that all people have a fundamental right to live in safety and that Empowerment Self-Defence education is a significant step towards such a society.
Kia Haumaru is the only accredited safety education network in Aotearoa providing free and accessible safety education in schools, tertiary and community venues nationwide. We focus on preventing violence; specifically physical, sexual and emotional violence against kōtiro and wāhine. We also address rape culture, teach confidence, consent, and strategies to survive direct physical violence.
Our course provides a unique space for people to talk about their experiences with violence. We discuss healthy relationships and provide tools of intervention, maintaining physical safety, being assertive and how to respond when violence has occurred.
Aotearoa has a shameful record for family harm, ranking #1 in the OECD for family violence, with 1 out of every 3 women experiencing violence in their lifetime. These are challenging figures to witness, and paired with the knowledge that 76% of family violence incidents go unreported, offers a sobering snapshot of the current reality kōtiro and wāhine in Aotearoa are facing.
Over our 30 years we have empowered over half a million individuals across Aotearoa - help us on our mission to bring the life-changing tools of empowerment and safety education to the women of today and our future generations.
All donations received will be spent providing personal safety education courses to kōtiro and wāhine in schools, tertiary institutions and community venues throughout Aotearoa.
