A 200km Fundraising Hikoi from Hauraki to Kawhia to help Ka'iulani get access to support and treatment she needs to beat Neuroblastoma.
Waikato
Hīkoi for Ka'iulani
Hauraki to Kāwhia
Ka’iulani is a beautiful little two year old girl with a fighting warrior spirit. Daughter of our cousin Manihera and Moana Forbes she has recently been diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rear form of cancer.
Undergoing an intensive treatment programme of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy to help rid her body of cancer, Ka’iulani spent weeks leading into and the months coming out of Christmas receiving the best care possible in Starship Childrens Hospital. Moana and Manihera with the support of their whānau have been by her side every step of the way to give strength, to be with their daughter, to learn everything they can about the cancer and to seek all the best avenues of treatment.
The journey they have made so far has been an arduous one and we wanted to come together to tautoko our cousins by creating a journey of our own for them. One that has a hono (connection) to our cousins, one that will hopefully uplift their mauri, give them continued strength and one that will provide pūtea towards helping to fund treatments not currently funded here in Aotearoa. Inspired by Ka’iulani and her true resilience and perseverance we are going on a Hīkoi of Hope, a Hīkoi for Ka’iulani.
We will walk 200km from the landing place of the Tainui Waka here in Hauraki at Waihīhī to it’s final resting place in Maketū, Kāwhia. It will be a 7 day journey. We will traverse Maunga heading up to Kohukohunui in the Hunua ranges and also Pirongia in Waikato. We will stop to rest at campsites and Marae, reflecting on the days journey of connecting with places and spaces of significance to the whānau, to us.
What can you do to help? Sponsor us on our journey. Up to you how you choose to sponsor, whether you sponsor per km or whether you choose to sponsor by kōhā. All pūtea will go to Moana, Manihera and Ka’iulani with the hope of providing support towards funding the treatment she needs.
There will be 5-6 of us making the full journey so far and two more cuzzies joining us for the Pirongia to Kawhia part of the journey.
