I am riding almost twice the length of the South Island on a mountain bike to raise funds that will save the lives of threatened penguins.
Dunedin North, Dunedin
It am riding the Sounds to Sounds in March 2023. The ride is the length of Te Waipounamu (South Island), starting at the northern end of Queen Charlotte Sound and ending at Milford Sound in Fiordland, and I will be on a mountain bike. I aim to raise funds that will save the lives of threatened penguins.
My start date is Monday 6th March 2023 at 5am in the Marlborough Sounds. I arrive in Milford Sound approximately two weeks later. But of course it's not a direct route by any means. In total, it's a 1500km bike ride. The length of the South Island, measured tip to toe, is 840km.
I am supporting my chosen charity, the Wildlife Hospital, Dunedin. Their work is critical to species such as Yellow-eyed penguins on the Otago Peninsula. I want my kids and their kids to enjoy encounters with those sorts of species in the future.
The Wildlife Hospital is a veterinary facility specialising in the treatment of New Zealand’s native species. It receives sick and injured animals, provides diagnosis and triage, treatment, rehabilitation and recovery to ensure successful release. It is the only organisation to do so for native species in the South Island. Successful treatment of individual animals is critical to species survival. The Wildlife Hospital is funded entirely by donations and I want to generate significant funding to support this wonderful cause.
