Janie's gone crazy for the "Mount Everest" challenge

It’s been a difficult challenge but rewarding in so many ways: seeing various sunrises and sunsets, meeting new people along the way and most of all committing to a good cause building on internal strength and encouragement to see it through.

Thank you for your support and donations.

Was struggling with my right calf all of yesterday, but knew I had to get another climb in before tomorrow. Skies seemed to clear a bit, which helped a bit as the air was really cold.

    Yahoo, two more to go!

Thursday 6 April'17 - One more day to go before the end of the challenge.

This walk was nice and cool after the day’s rain we had. Need to do one more climb, so gotta get moving.

After the first climb this afternoon and getting a little wet with the drizzle of the rain, I decided to do another climb. Second climb was a lot windier and wetter than the first climb.

I was not planning on doing any walks today due to the poor weather, but there seemed to be a break in the rain we’ve had all day (Cyclone Debbie) around 3ish so I took this opportunity to do a quick climb.

    Did another climb yesterday.

It was a really hot day and made this climb a lot harder. Only 6 more to go.

There were a lot more people climbing yesterday than I had seen in the last few weeks.

Second climb up was even tougher with the sun baking on me with every opportunity. Once at the top it was like Gorillas in the mist.

I’m so happy because I’m down to the single digits now. Only 7 more to go.

Starting the climb I noticed the fog half way down the Mount. First climb was tough as I could feel the humidity in the air.

I decided on the 4x4 track this morning and was lucky enough to see the "Ikan Jubal" sailing into port.

    Sunday afternoon walk with David.

I was not quite in the mood as I almost dozed off on the sofa after a lazy afternoon.

But I had committed to this walk and so it had to be done. 29 down, 9 to go.

This was a hard week for me as I managed to do 13 climbs in the last 7 days.

Sunday morning walk after a night of social events.

Got some friends and my supporting husband to walk with me, even their little ones joined in although they had to be carried most of the way.

    Thanks for your support guys!

Saturday morning, rise and shine. What an awesome sunrise.

Second walk up, I could not believe this was the same day. The coolness in the air made this climb a lot easier

Second climb up this morning was as tough as the first one. Sun was not quite up over the horizon at that time.

On my way down I could see the sun glistening from behind the ocean, so had to stop as it was breath-taking.

I was ready to give up after the first climb, as I almost fell on that last stretch of zig-zag stairs due to flashlights blinding my eyesight.

Then I thought about the weather forecast for the next few days. I came to the conclusion I had many climbs to catch up with the final challenge day next week, and had to make the most of the good weather at this stage so did another climb. This one was really hard!

As I got out the car I noticed a “big white cloud” hanging over the top of the mount.

First climb started with a little drizzle of rain, and I hoped it would not pour down like the other morning.

It was a lot darker this morning than the previous mornings, you can’t see much in the pics.

Monday afternoon I attempted a climb, this was a tough one. By this point I had convinced myself not to do another climb.

Second time up, a little girl (wearing this t-shirt) made the walk look so easy. I just had to keep up with her. That’s enough for one day.

  • 16 - drenched in rain

      24 March 2017
    Main image

Started the first climb this morning, and for some reason it was really hot and humid.

I had about a quarter to go to the top when it started with a light rain. By the time I had reached the top it was pouring down and I had to take quick cover under the trees.

Coming down the mount we had to jog through little rivers created by the rain and muddy puddles that had my legs, socks and shoes covered in grains of sand. So called it quits for the day.

What a beautiful morning. The first climb started with a chill in the air and a slight headwind.

Today was really tough, and half way through the first climb I was already thinking of excuses not to do the second climb. By the time I got to the bottom after my first descent I was motivated enough to do another climb.

I could feel my energy levels rising with the sun stroking my face as it rises behind the horizon.

Although the muscles were warmed up, the second clim was even tougher than the first. I need to do much more exercises and a lot less R&R.

After the first climb with David this mornig, my muscles were warmed up so I did another one.

    The views were just spectacular.

I stuffed up my Strava, pressed some buttons I shouldn’t have. Well, at least I have the evidence.

    16 March'17 with a time of 43:48

I met some tourists, a lovely couple Eleanor & Graeme, on the climb up.

When you get to the cross roads and you’re not sure which way to go, take note from the locals.

It’s not always about the time. Enjoy the walk, take in the scenery, meet new people is what makes each climb all the worth while.

Did a climb on 24 Feb'17 (my 5th so far) and was not feeling too well, so did not attempt another one after this climb.

Have been on meds and not doing the challenge all week but will be back into it on the 13th. I have lots of climbs to make up for the missed days.

While catching my breath with less that 5 min to the top, I met a lovely German couple (Anita and Roland) from the Artania cruise ship in the port today (20 Feb'17) and I convinced them to go all the way to the top as they were so close, so I had no excuse but to motivate myself do do another climb.

2nd climb was tough with the sun baking down on me, that's enough for one day.

I teamed up with David Kriel on the first walk on Friday 17 Feb'17. It was an enjoyable walk as we had a little bit of rain half way up, which helped us cool down a bit. One down 37 more to go!
