Great Wall Half Marathon for Heart Foundation NZ
Amberley, Canterbury
On the 16th of May I will be aiming to complete the Great Wall Half Marathon in China. It’s predominantly stairs, so the goal is to finish, not run. However, in order to get myself fit enough there will be plenty of running and hiking involved. This is a level of fitness I’ve never reached before so safe to say this is going to be a challenge.
I’ve decided to use this challenge as an opportunity to raise some money for The Heart Foundation NZ. There are a number of reasons why this cause is important to me.
1. I’m a physio. Movement and fitness is what I preach every day. Cardiac health is a massive part of that, and it’s time I walk the walk as well as talk the talk.
2. Both my grandfathers suffered from heart attacks, one of whom passed away in his 60s. My dad is surrounded by three loving and concerned (bossy) women, who have encouraged (bullied) him into having all the necessary screenings, but we are very aware that heart disease runs in his family. Prevention and screenings are a huge part of what they do at Heart Foundation NZ. We need the fence at the top of the cliff, not the ambulance at the bottom.
3. Growing up in rural NZ, we have had many fit and active members of our community pass away early, and unexpectedly due to heart attacks. This has affected so many people that I know, and every time it is devastating.
So, if you happen to still be reading, and you are in a position to do so, please consider donating to my cause. Every little bit is seen and appreciated.
