Raising money for the Cancer Society and raising awareness by doing Junk Free June - please help me reach my goal!
Manawatu / Whanganui
My story is the same as last year, the pain is still just as raw and my reason is still the same... Cancer f****ing sucks and effects just about everyone in one way or another.
I went to sign up for Junk Free June again this year to unfortunately see that it seemed to taking a break for 2019 as well. But that's not going to stop me raising funds for a charity that is dear to my heart - Cancer Society New Zealand. For those of you that have not heard, Junk Free June is an annual fundraising event that raises money for the Cancer Society by challenging people to give up junk food for the month of June. So this June, I will again go Junk Free with the hopes to raise funds for the Cancer Society. My list includes but is not limited to: alcohol, chocolate, ice cream, lollies, white bread, fizzy drinks, bought juices, pastries, chips and fast food.
Cancer has had a significant influence on my life as I watched two inspiring people try everything to beat it. Both absolutely loved food and both ended up unable to eat. Both fought a long hard journey. The past few years were incredibly hard for myself and my family as I watched my sister in law, a strong young woman, an amazing mum, in pain due to this horrible disease which took her life between Christmas and New Years 2017. It is heartbreaking losing someone and also watching and feeling the sorrow of those whose lives they touched.
Cancer takes its toll on so many people and it makes us appreciate our time here on earth. Therefore, I wish to raise funds that go towards getting patients access to the best care, comfortable treatment environments and support for themselves and their families that silently suffer too. Even more I hope to raise awareness that cancer does not discriminate. It can affect anyone at any time in their life be it the beginning or the end.
In honour of all those who have battled, continue to battle or have lost their battle, all those supporters and anyone who has been affected by cancer.
In memory of Rina and Braide - forever you will be immortalised in my memory and imprinted on my heart.
Many thanks, Georgia.
The two Cancer Societies that will receive the funds are areas where I have spent my life. I was born and breed in Taranaki and I now live in Palmerston North. I hope this makes a difference in the two communities that have shaped me into who I am today.
