Cycling for a Cause - 3,000kms - 44 days- the length of New Zealand for Sands.
Auckland
I’m 75 and have at last made time to fulfill a lifelong dream.
New Zealand is my love and photography is my pastime, so I’m combining the two of these and heading off on a long bike ride. 3,000km to be exact - from Cape Reinga, the northernmost tip of New Zealand, to Bluff at the bottom of the South Island. That has to mean it’s all downhill surely!?
In case it’s not, I’ve been increasing my three bike rides each week ranging from 80 - 125kms each. This is just as well, as the first day is 56kms along the beach, hopefully with a tailwind! Then kilometres of gravel roads, off-road trails, and quiet country byways. Passing sheep by the thousands, waterfalls, bridges, still more sheep, plus meeting so many interesting people along the way. I decided an e-bike will give me the freedom to meander, taking photos on a trusty iPhone 11 Pro as I go.
The most heartwarming decision I have made is to Cycle for a Cause and have chosen Sands, who provide support for those who experience stillbirths or newborn deaths in NZ.
So I need your help, if you could contribute to this worthy cause it will certainly motivate me over the 44 days of my ride.
Live my dream through the photos I’ll post - then go out and create your own.
Thanks to you all 23 December 2022
We have raised $6000 for Sands. I am so grateful for your generosity. This will help the Sands volunteers in 2023. I had a great ride and can’t believe the 3038kms through this wonderful country we live in. More shades of green than I knew existed. So many small cafes and coffee trucks making divine food. Peter and I are relaxing in Pauanui waiting for Santa to visit .
Thanks so much it was great to catch up .
