I’m cutting off my 20+ year old dreadlocks to raise money for Waipuna Hospice.
Bay of Plenty
After more than 20 years, my dreadlocks have become part of who I am. They’ve been with me through life’s ups and downs… and now they’re coming off – for love, for gratitude, and for a cause that’s etched on my heart.
In 2018 Waipuna Hospice supported my Dad with his final battle with cancer - with their support we were able to keep Dad at home until his final days. This included delivering a hospital bed and aids, home visits and a nurse making a 1.5 hour round trip to administer much needed pain relief - TWICE in one night! When we couldn’t provide Dad with the level of care he needed he moved in to the hospice and the beautiful Waipuna team gently took over from us. They were able to make him comfortable for his last few hours with us. We were and are so grateful to them for everything they did for us.
Every year Waipuna Hospice cares for nearly 1,000 patients and supports over 2,600 family members. We were one of those families, and Waipuna was there when we needed them the most.
Waipuna Hospice aren’t government funded and only gets 43% of their operating costs covered by the national healthcare system. They need to raise $8.4 million this year so they can continue to support families like ours.
I’ve been talking about doing this fundraiser for 6 years so now it’s time to just do it!
I don’t want to cut off my dreads - but Waipuna need donations more than I need my dreads. If you can, please donate. Every dollar is love in action!
THEY HAVE GONE!!! 😱 3 January 2026
It was agreed that New Years Day was the best day for the big chop! My twin brother made the first cut and then my sisters spent over two hours cutting, washing and brushing until no dreads remained. After a guessing competition the final weigh-in was 480g.
I was blown away by the amount donated! Thank you so much to everyone who gave their support. It will take a while to get used to the new-do, but I’m proud to know that with your help we have made an important contribution to the crucial work Waipuna Hospice do every day!
Thanks heaps Julie!
Thanks Dom and Kristy! 😊
