Making good of a bad situation

  • We did it!

32km in 8.5hours! We walked from the end of the Tongariro crossing almost to the devils staircase and back! It was hard, but amazing! We had four seasons of weather and low visibility at the top! We overcame many personal battles but absolutely smashed it in the end 😊

  • Bad news 😭

😭 I have just received notice that the Ring of Fire event has been cancelled due to Covid restrictions…However, this will not stop me and my support crew doing our own event! We plan to still go down and do the Tongariro Crossing on the 12th March (and depending on our timings getting over and weather conditions at the time we may turn around and walk the 19.5k back as well!) the original event is postponed until next year so I will do that then, but my givealittle page will be expired, I will post our progress on the crossing on the 12th of March xx

  • Change of plans

      17 January 2022

About time for another update on my run for Brain Tumour Support NZ, unfortunately I am not able to participate in this years Goat run due to the numerous surgeries I had last year and not having enough time after recovery to train and get my fitness to a standard to be able to run it within the time frames.

However, I am not giving up just like that! I have contacted the organisers of the Goat and they have let me change my entry to the Ring of Fire event on the 12th March which I will walk (think Mt Ruapehu). I still want to push myself so have entered to do 32km of the mountain. This will definitely be a challenge, but so is living with brain tumours! The timing works out well as it is the month before my next brain scan (🤞🤞🤞 fingers crossed nothings changed)

This time I am not walking alone, my lovely sister Mic Greenwood will be joining me for the 6-9hour trek 😊 it will be good sister bonding time!

I am doing this to raise fund for brain tumour support and for my daddy who died of a malignant brain tumour (secondary) on the 19th July 2020 ❤️

  • April update

      21 April 2021

    Hi all,

Just a quick update, I have had my repeat brain scan and my brain tumours are unchanged! Yay! This means it is not my tumours causing my issues when it comes to running. I am booked in for major surgery (not for brain tumours) on the 14th May and six weeks after that I will be able to slowly start training again! I miss running!

I will update again when when I am over this surgery hurdle and the training starts!

Thank you all for your support xxx

  • Change of plans

      22 February 2021

    Hi all,

Unfortunately due to poor health over the past month (not brain tumour related) I will not be able to participate in this years Goat run. I have left it until the last minute as I was determined I would come right, however I need to listen to my body and the doctors and take time to get this sorted.

I do have some good news though, the organisers of The Goat Run have kindly allowed me to transfer my entry to next years event so I will smash it then!

I would like to thank everyone who has donated so far, I know The Brain Tumour Support Group are extremely grateful for your generosity and you have helped so many people by funding brain boxes for newly diagnosed patients with brain tumours.

I have asked Givealittle to extend the time on this page and I will continue to train and fundraise for The Brain Tumour Support Group when I am well again.

    Lots of love

    Nicole

  • Trainings going well

      19 December 2020

I have signed up for Squadrun training and it’s going well so far! Today I got out for an all terrain run, I did hills, stairs, roads, rocks, farmland and more hills to practise my footing. I’m stuffed now! I hope my legs recover for my run tomorrow!

I have also signed up to do the women’s 10k in Kumeu in Jan, I thought about doing the half (and still might) but thought I would take it slow and not risk injury. It will be a good training run!

Thanks again for your continued support xx

  • Running in the dark

      10 November 2020

    Hi all,

my training is going well, I have started off running small distances with hills (hills are hard!). Last night I ran in the dark as hubby didn’t come home until late, but I’m sticking to the program - no excuses! (Excuse the blurry photo-took it on the move)

An update on me and my brain tumours, I was referred for Genetic testing (sounds cool eh! Like the tv shows), I got messages asking /telling me to bring a support person when I went for testing, my attitude was ‘why would I need a support person for a mouth swab/blood test?’... well let me tell you...It started with family history/details, then a number of scary conditions were discussed with me (by this stage I was thinking I should have taken the support person hint), I then had to strip down as I was examined for cafe au lait spots (I don’t tick this box), It was explained to me the risk to my health insurance etc involved in getting this testing, And then I was sent for bloods. My blood Sample has been sent to Alabama and results can take 3+ months and because they are looking at a potential ‘mosaic’ version (Only affects half) it could take longer. Anyway it took about 3 hours and by the end I was mentally exhausted and to be honest probably didn’t take all the info in...(again...should have taken a support person)...

So I’ve put that aside, and again I’m not going to stress until there is something to stress about ;)

    The training continues!

Thanks again for your ongoing support.

Doing this for my daddy who died of a malignant brain tumour (secondary) on the 19th July 2020 ❤️

  • I’ve got my ticket

      1 September 2020

I have secured my ticket for the Goat run on the 27th February 2021! Training has begun and I’m totally looking forward to it (and a little concerned as to what I’ve got myself in to). I have received my official Brain Tumour Support T-shirt for the event too 😊

Thank you so much to everyone who is supporting me and my cause xx

  • July update

      26 July 2020

I apologise for the lack of updates on this page. I have been with my father most of the last month as he was very sick with cancer, My dad passed away on the 19th July after his lung cancer spread to his brain causing a golf ball sized tumour at the back of his brain. Once the cancer spread to dads brain he deteriorated quite quickly and he died in hospice. Mandy from the Brain Tumour support group is going to support my mum now.

The founders of the Goat Run have been in contact with me and it looks like the run is now going to be in February instead of December due to Covid. The new date is 27th February 2021.

My dad wanted to run this with me, so now I will be running this for my dad and he can be with me in spirit.

The Brain Tumour support trust does some amazing work and your donations help with sending out brain boxes to newly diagnosed brain tumour patients and support for the patients (like me) and their families. Please help support my cause x
