More than a haircut

On 9th September, I’ll be cutting off 35 cm of my hair to donate to help create wigs for children experiencing hair loss.

But this haircut is about much more than donating hair.

I’m also raising money for Archer, the 11 year old son of my husband’s best friend.

The week before we were due to fly to New Zealand for our holiday where we had planned to spend some overdue time with the Harmons, we received heartbreaking news that Archer had suddenly collapsed at Kaikōura Hospital. After being transferred to Christchurch, doctors discovered a large brain tumour.

Archer underwent surgery to remove as much of the tumour as possible, and everyone hoped for the best. Sadly, the biopsy confirmed it was a high-grade glioma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Since then, Archer has lost movement in his right arm and leg and now requires full-time care. His prognosis remains uncertain. While there is currently no cure, treatments and medications can help manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.

Watching a family you care about face something so devastating changes your perspective. It made me realise I wanted to do more.

So I’m turning a haircut into something that can make a difference.

By donating my hair, I hope to help children experiencing hair loss. By raising money, I hope to ease some of the financial pressure on Archer and his family, allowing them to focus on what matters most: being together and supporting Archer through the journey ahead.
