Fund raising for Alzheimers Otago with the Sound 2 Sound Event - a 1500km self-supported bike ride from Queen Charlotte to Milford Sound
Alexandra, Otago
The ‘entry fee’ for the Sounds to Sounds event is a $100 donation to a charity, so what better charity to choose that Alzheimers Otago, especially as the funds will stay in our Central Otago community. And what an opportunity to raise more money and support for such an essential community organisation.
On March 1st my husband and I set off from Ship Cove in Queen Charlotte Sound and plan to ride 1500kms, unsupported to Milford Sound within 20 days. This will be quite a challenge for us (we are well into our 60s) both physically and mentally, but nothing like the challenge of living with this disease.
Just over a year ago my biking buddy, Elspeth, lost her husband to Alzheimers at 69 yrs. He was diagnosed at 63, younger than me - way too young. The tendrils of the disease touch us all, be it a family member or close friend and none of us are exempt from its effect. Community support organisations are notoriously underfunded and Alzheimers Otago is no exception. They provided amazing support to my buddy as she walked such a difficult road, so please donate generously to help smooth the way a little for those who are treading this path.
We nailed it! 1 May 2024
The Sounds to Sounds ride was epic. Not only did it give me a real sense of personal achievement, but also allowed a platform to raise the profile of Alzheimers Otago and to raise much needed funds. Over $4000 has been donated and we are over the moon with that. Thank you all so much for your support.
