Pedalling For HOPE

I'm cycling from Auckland to Wellington to raise money for suicide prevention

Nationwide

I've always wanted to do this ride and finally have the purpose to. Key To Life is a charitable trust which needs your help to change the way we Kiwis deal with suicide and mental health. The key to life is HOPE.

I'm gonna try to do my bit by riding solo from Auckland, through Waikato, King Country, Whanganui and Manawatu back to Welly over 8 days in February 2018. The idea is to go absolutely minimal (ie; pretty much just me, my bike, cellphone and the road) and to simply enjoy the effort and the great New Zealand countryside.

You can help make it even more worthwhile by donating to Key To Life via this page!

I'm involved because there are way too many New Zealanders taking their own lives. It's a tragedy that has touched me, and I know it's so common that you probably know someone who has taken that sad step too.

A2W day 8. Otaki to Wellington

Another day of perfect weather, ie;overcast, then clear, and a modest breeze meaning I barely had to pedal to get to Wellington in the first place. Super familiar territory also meant the ks kinda just disappeared. The old SH1 from Peka Peka to Raumati is beautiful to ride nowadays- almost zero traffic, plenty room, and nice and smooth. Noticeably higher incidence of Mamils coming into a metro area, but no problems all the same. Extra cool to see familiar faces too including the Wellington Water Peloton (pictured), plus whanau and other workmates at the Gasworks Miramar for what was possibly the nicest tasting pint Ive ever had. Very thankful to all and feeling very lucky. Before I sign off, some numbers for the data geeks:

8 days, 740km, 6708m elevation gain, 26.5 hours, 16 bananas, 8 pikelets, 1 corned beef sandwich and 0 flats! :-)

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
