Project Waikato - every step of the river

  • The spades have landed!

I just heard from Mandy at Waikato RiverCare - she shared a photo of some shiny new spades that have been bought thanks to all of your kind donations! 🥰

As Mandy said, “I thought I'd share the pic of just some of the spades we've bought with your kind donation. Thanks, they're going to be brilliant and they'll never be as clean again!”

Until now, the Waikato RiverCare team had to hassle and borrow spades for their volunteer planting days - so being able to have their own set makes a real difference. These tools will keep getting muddy for years to come, helping volunteers plant thousands of native trees along the Waikato River 🌿

It’s so special to see our Project Waikato journey turning into something lasting and practical - your generosity literally putting tools into the hands of the people caring for the river.

Thank you again to everyone who supported the project - whether by donating, sharing, cheering, or sending kind words along the way 💚

And who knows… maybe one day you’ll even get to use one of these spades yourself if you join a Waikato RiverCare volunteer day!!!!😉

  • Project Waikato Completed!

      4 November 2025

After seven unforgettable days, I reached the Tasman Sea at Port Waikato - the final step in my 390 km journey tracing the Waikato River from its source at Lake Taupō to its end at the ocean.

Along the way, I watched the river transform - from a hypnotysing-blue rapid river to a wide, powerful force carving its way through the heart of the country. And in many ways, I changed with it. There were moments of awe and peace, and moments that broke me down completely - but every step reminded me why this river matters.

Project Waikato started as a simple idea: to follow the river, tell its story, and give back through supporting Waikato RiverCare. What it became was so much more - a journey of connection, reflection, and gratitude.

I've been trying to capture my moments of awe and struggle on my Instragam updates - https://www.instagram.com/runjusta/ and I'd love to share more with you if we get to have a yarn at some point soon!

To everyone who donated, sent words of encouragement, followed along, or simply believed in the purpose behind this run - THANK YOU! Your support carried me when my legs didn’t want to.

May the river continue to connect us all - may we be its guardians, as it has been ours - and may its story keep flowing through us for generations to come.

  • Made it to Arapuni!

Hi all! I somehow made it to Arapuni and am now catching up on all the updates after a few days with limited mobile range.

Thank you all so much for your support!!

I must say.. things are not going as planned. I really struggle with my right Achilles and shin / high front ankles pains on both legs. Day 3 was a real pain cave, my pace slowed down so much and the weather wasn't helping neither! I somehow made it to Arapuni and have a planned rest day today. I spend most of the day in vertical position with my legs high up! Hopefully that can help with the swelling and I'll be able to start stage 4 tomorrow... 🤞

In the meantime, check oit the updates on my Instagram and strava!
