Fundraising for Nelson Regional Breast Cancer trust by running my first marathon
Nelson / Tasman
3 years ago I decided to get fit by entering my first event. Considering at this stage I couldn't run to the end of the street, it was a pretty big deal for me. But I soon got the bug, and before I'd even completed my first event I'd signed up for my first half marathon. Since then I've entered countless races and completed 4 half marathons.
The idea of running a full marathon has been a goal of mine for some time, so when I saw this event pop up on my newsfeed, I grabbed by credit card and signed up before I could change my mind.
A very dear friend of mine is the founding trustee of the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust. A two time survivor of breast cancer and an inspiration to me, I promised her over a glass of our favourite wine that if I ran a marathon I'd raise money for the trust she started.
The trust raises money to benefit breast cancer patients and their families throughout the top of the South Island, all funds raised stay in the local area.
To date the trust has purchased a Portable Ultrasound Machine which is used on a daily basis to help diagnose patients who present with a breast lump. They have also raised funds to purchase numerous items that help keep breast cancer patients comfortable and occupied whilst receiving their chemotherapy treatment, from warm rugs through to portable DVD players and magazine subscriptions.
So I'm going to run 42kms through the Aaoraki Mount Cook National Park. It's a beautiful setting in a breathtaking part of New Zealand. This is my first marathon and a huge goal of mine. The fact that I'll also be raising money for a charity that gives so much to cancer patients and their families is an added bonus and a real motivator.
