Kidsline, is free phone service for all young kiwis who need someone to talk to... but what if there wasn't anyone on the other end?
Auckland
0800Kidsline is a non-government funded service. It's parent, Lifeline, only has enough funds to keep the phone lines open until the middle of 2017.
Mental illness, is and continues to be on the rise in New Zealand, with very little focus on keeping these free services available to all Kiwi's.
Receiving 15,000 calls a week, Lifeline really is some Kiwi's life line.
So what I am doing about it?
Well, this holiday period, I am reconsidering.
Reconsidering the need for material possessions and the money I will spend.
And?
I have asked friends and family, for donations, in replacement of gifts.
Likewise, instead of buying them gifts, I am donating the money I'd other wise spend, on their behalves.
Oh, and for my birthday in January, no gifts please, donations only.
100% of the donations will be going towards keeping 0800Kidsline up and running for all those Kiwi's under the age of 14.
Why?
I am lucky. As someone who, has and still suffers from mental illness, I have someone, I can talk to. I know, that there is always someone, I can talk to. Whether it is a family member, a friend, or a colleague.
"Sadness is not having someone to talk to when you really need to"...
...but what if you called and there was no one on the other end of the line?
0800Kidsline is and always will be very close to my heart. As an alumni buddie from the 2010 December intake, I spent 2011-12 volunteering on the phones.
