Hosted by The Remarkables Ski Field, a tenacious group of runners and cyclists are challenging themselves to run or mountain bike up the skifield road on Sunday 20 August 2017, to raise money for the Cancer Society in support of Daffodil Day
The Remarkables road is a 13,2km sealed/gravel road climbing up to the Remarkables ski field, to an elevation of 1622m (5,321ft) above the sea level, It’s one of the highest roads in the country.
The athletes will be spurred on by jaw dropping and expansive vistas of Lake Wakatipu and surrounding peaks, before turning into the skifield basin to face the final push towards the finish line at the base building.
The runners and riders are hoping to make 2017 a record breaking year for contributions to the New Zealand Cancer Society in support of Daffodil Day.
The Cancer Society provide invaluable support, information and community leadership with the mission of reducing the incidence and impact of cancer in New Zealand.
Funds raised go towards supportive care, client/patient accommodation, research, raising awareness and health promotion.
Every little bit helps, and the runners/riders would love to help make a difference, so whether you would like to pledge $1 for every km climbed, or throw today's coffee money in as a donation, we are amazingly grateful for every contribution!
This year's ride has a personal touch for me, as one of my friends has recently been diagnosed and is undergoing treatment and recovery at the moment. I know that the Cancer Society has provided invaluable support for her and her partner. It has been sort of unbelievable to witness someone close to me face this experience with so much tenacity and bravery - everything has happened shockingly quickly and has been an incredible challenge that she has faced staunchly and gracefully, even though her life has been irreversibly altered by the consequences.
I am dedicating my ride to my friend. And would love to be able to wear a rainbow cycling top/jersey in her honour, as this has been a symbol that her friends and family have championed as a part of forming a community of support for her, so if anyone owns, and would kindly consider lending me a rainbow jersey for Sunday, I would be super grateful.
Remember to keep your health WOF up to date, even though the process sometimes feels scary, early detection and fast treatment makes a massive difference!
Any contributions gratefully received
