I seek to raise funds for youth mental health care through my challenge to cycle the 3000km length of New Zealand, self-supported.
Canterbury
Good mental health is something that I took for granted, however, I’ve come to realise how prevalent mental health problems are, and how serious and overwhelming they can be. Young people are particularly at risk, and timely skilled counselling can be pivotal in managing crisis and supporting recovery. The importance and ready availability of that support and relatable resources is something that I feel strongly about. It is why I support ‘I Am Hope’ which is the youth and community focussed support group of the Key to Life (KTL) Charitable Trust, established by Mike King.
I’ve been motivated to take on the challenge of cycling the 3000km length of New Zealand, as part of the Tour of Aotearoa, which is a self-supported and largely off-road event known as a brevet. The experiences and opportunities of the journey are an exciting prospect, yet also a daunting challenge. I’m 63 years old and have been active in endurance sports for a long time, but never an event of this scale.
My entry required a charity donation and I chose Key to Life Charitable Trust. I’ve also decided to invite sponsorship support from anyone who would like to join me on the journey, and help me raise some money to fund the great work of ‘I Am Hope’, in providing free and easily accessible counselling services and resources for young people. I don’t want anyone to feel obligation, however, if the cause resonates with you, then I’d appreciate any support. Fundraising is not something I’d normally do, but I’m already well outside of my comfort zone!
I know that I’ll face plenty of challenges along the way, both mental and physical. I’m also conscious that those are trivial compared to the day to day struggles that many people have with their mental health. Any sponsorship will add meaning and perspective to my journey, particularly in tough times.
Thanks,
Mike
Mental healthcare for our youth is a critical area which needs more resources. ‘I am Hope’ does great work in this area and I’d like to assist with fundraising as part of my length of NZ cycle challenge.
