Fundraising for Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust
Otago
Those who know me know I love a challenge—especially when it pushes me physically. It’s what makes me feel alive.
Over the years, I’ve taken on some big ones: becoming the first person to swim the 45km length of Lake Wānaka (in a wetsuit), and the first (and only so far) to swim the 35km length of Lake Dunstan (just in a swimsuit).
This year, I’m stepping things up again. On 9 May, I’ll be taking on the Otematata Best Dam Backyard Ultra, aiming to run 100km. The challenge? Running 6.7km every hour, on the hour, until I can’t go any further—15 laps to reach my goal.
I’m doing this in support of the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust, a cause close to my heart. Many years ago, I was part of the Otago Water Rescue Squad alongside Darryl Fairbairn. Through that, we worked with the rescue helicopter when needed. It’s a cause that has always stayed close to my heart—not just because of the incredible service it provides, but because it reminds me of Darryl.
Darryl was deeply community-minded and losing him has been a huge loss—not only to the wider community, but to everyone lucky enough to know him as family or friend.
This challenge is my way of honouring that legacy while supporting a service that saves lives across our region.
I’ll be sharing updates on my training and progress in the lead-up to the event—so you can follow along (and help keep me accountable!).
