Running 657.4km for Nana Toot Toot; Reflecting on 6,574+ days lived positively with PD

    With 5min left of November at 11.55pm yesterday I finished the final kilometre! Something that seemed impossible a few weeks ago, and which has been the hardest, best, special, most rewarding and silly thing I’ve ever set out to do. 30 days and 30 half marathons. Some days the overall distance got a bit quirky around cricket mahi, but ran everyday and completed the 657.4km. Totalling 42 runs, and nearly 97 hours. Yesterday we also passed the $2,000 raised mark, and that’s so wildly humbling.

    The number 6574 was the driving factor behind how and why this became days measured in half marathons, as those are the days my nana lived positively with, and managed, PD. So positively; she had her ‘Parky days’ and when things were harder, especially in the last few years, but she never stopped and kept being the incredible woman that was Ruth Sutherland, Nana Toot Toot. Her love, ABBA Gold, and knowing the good this money raised can do has powered me through the hardest parts of this month. It’s hard to not be positive if trying to do something for nana!

    I don’t think it’s quite sunk in what’s been achieved but the biggest thank you to everyone who has donated or read more about PD or about this journey. The page stays open for another 6 weeks if people still want to be involved and donate, or learn a bit more.

    As I ran down the hill to home last night listening to Boney M. I knew she'd be smiling, for we all do when we think of her. Love you nana, this will forever be for you x

  • Week Three Down!

    Week three: Thursday 16th Nov - Wednesday 22nd Nov

    Here's the key stats for this week:

    Kilometres: 154.4 km (avg. per day 22 km) and there's 177.6km to go (I've done 479.8km)

    Total time moving on feet: 31hrs 39min

    Shortest run: 21.4km

    Longest run: 24km

    Dogs seen: 172

    Cats seen: 11

    Ice-cream breaks: 2

    Music: ABBA Gold (I am genuinely concerned I will never be able to listen to anything else when I run in the future)

    Tāmaki Makaurau has this past week been doing it's best Crowded House impression giving four seasons in one day and some of these runs have been very damp, but the sunsets have more than made up for that! The body is still holding up okay coming out of a rougher patch the week previous, and I'm just keeping on plodding.

    It was so humbling last week to have such a big uptick in donations at the 2 week mark and some publicity done by NZ Cricket (https://www.nzc.nz/news-items/aspiring-female-umpire-running-for-parkinson-s/) as well. We'll tick over the $1,500 mark this week and it's incredible to think of all the good those funds can and will do in the future. When I started this I didn't really know what to expect, or didn't have a specific goal in mind, so this is really mind-boggling in the most wonderful way.

    I'm towards the back end of this adventure now, with 8 days to go, and will find some more words when I pass the 500km mark later this week, but for now just the biggest thank you to everyone who has donated, read, and those following along.

  • Week Two: Halfway through!

    November 8th - November 15th

    Here's the key stats for this week:

    Kilometres: 172.4 km (average per day 21.5 km) and there's 332km to go (I have ran 325.4km so far)

    Total time moving on feet: 24hrs 46min

    Shortest run: 12km after a day of cricket umpiring

    Longest run: 30km the next day

    Dogs seen: 204

    Cats seen: 9

    Ice-cream breaks: 2

    Top music: ABBA Gold (I know not a genre, but it's been on repeat and know nana would be there dancing or singing along to those absolute bangers)

    Thank you so much to everyone who has been following along, reading about nana and this adventure of mine, and if you've been able, donating. It is wild and absolutely humbling that we're about to hit the $1,000 mark knowing all the good that pūtea can do for whānau and initiatives round the motu with Parkinson's NZ.

    I feel very lucky to have had so much sunshine this past fortnight, the support of so many people so far, and for my legs mostly holding up okay. Some of these kilometres are extraordinarily slow or uncomfortable, but we're keeping going and keeping positive.

    My nana always did that, and just kept going. In the wise words of my cousin, Hamish, nana was an absolute legend and she never let anything slow her down or get in her way. Ever. I mostly feel lucky to have had someone in my life as strong and steady as her to do this for, and to keep pushing me along.

  • 250km down!

    A beautiful day here in Tāmaki Makaurau to cross the 250km milestone, having ran 261km in total now. Some aren't the fastest kilometres I've ever ran, and some have been hard, but just keeping plodding along feeling thankful for the sunshine, stopping to admire the beaches or plants or patterns in nature I know nana would have smiled at, and being very humbled by those who are supporting this wee adventure and cause

    Total time moving on feet: 22 hours 53 minutes

    Shortest run: 10km after a day of cricket umpiring

    Longest run: 34km the next day

    Dogs seen: 173

    Cats seen: 10

    Ice-cream breaks: 1

    Top music genre listened to when running: 70s pop

    I'm settling into my November routine of sleep, mahi, run, and getting these runs, shuffling jogs, and occasional walks in between work and life. My legs are starting to feel it a wee bit, but with the best cause and people in mind when I'm out there it's making any of that totally worth it.

    Thank you so much to all who have donated, shared kind words of encouragement, or just clicked into the page and learnt a wee bit more about PD, my nana toot toot's life, and why the mahi Parkinson's NZ does is so important to help those with PD, and their whānau, to live positively with PD. This kaupapa supports people living with PD to manage their symptoms, be part of a community, and live positively as they navigate this journey with home visits, education and seminars, support groups, wrap around care, and promoting the importance of ongoing research. For my nana through Parkinson’s Wairarapa this included education and support at home with Grandad and my wider whānau, but also exercise classes, walking groups, and singing and music classes.

    And that's what's going to keep me going!

  • Day One Down! 22km of 657km ticked off!

    And just like that, I’m off! Day one and 22km done!

    Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou and the biggest thank you to all the whānau, friends, workmates and community who have donated so far. It was incredible and very humbling to have already received so many before I had even started running!

    Big thanks to Parkinson’s NZ for the awesome shirt too, repping the mahi as I get out there!

    From here I probably plan on doing weekly updates, or when I pass big milestones like the 250 or 500km mark, so stay tuned for those where I’ll share how I’m getting on, some photos from the adventures this running takes me on, and continue to thank y’all for your support.

    Feeling thankful for my legs and body, my ability to do this and the people that are helping me make this possible and worthwhile.
