An update from Team Running on Empty..

As the world has been thrown a massive curve ball with these uncertain times of Covid 19, we too have been thrown a punch below the belt to our biggest and wildest dream of entering into the Mongol Rally.

It is right now we would have been in the UK making the final tweaks to our planned mission but its not to be.. For now..

Who knows what next year will look like and where and what we will all be doing but our entry has been transferred to next year or any rally in years to come.

We are ever so grateful for all of the donations that have come in and gone towards our number 1 charity I AM HOPE. Given these uncertain times it will be much appreciated and be of great use to help those that need to come out of that mental rut.

We hope to be back bigger and better.

Thanks again for all your support.

Team Running on Empty

Running on Empty - Nick, Ola & Simon are taking on the Mongol Rally 2020.

With nothing more than a few blankets, some peanuts, number 8 wire and a never say die attitude we are planning to drive a totally inappropriate car, no more than 1000cc, unsupported nearly 20,000 km across 3 desserts, 5 mountain ranges and nearly 20 countries.

The Mongol Rally is about getting lost for charity. Culturally, geographically and mentally LOST and escaping from the pressures of society.

You might ask why can’t we just do a sponsored walk or something? You might think this sounds like a crazy and ridiculous way to support a charity?

Well it’s not! It’s about getting lost so that we all can DISCOVER. Discover new cultures, religions, people and places. It’s about generating meaningful interactions throughout the journey.

All the while, gaining support for our chosen charity & raising a shed-load of cash for them too!

We need your help and support. Did you know that in 2017 alone 606 young people took their own life in New Zealand alone! That’s a terrifying statistic! We’re trying to raise $20,000 ( $1 per KM ) for the amazing charity ‘I am Hope’, who are on a mission to provide hope, courage, support and treatment for those struggling with mental health issues all throughout New Zealand.

For the last three years ‘I am Hope’ have been promoting positive attitudinal societal change in schools and communities up and down the country; and funding private care and counselling for young people stuck-in-the-mud on waiting lists.

You can read more about the amazing work that they do on their website https://www.iamhope.org.nz/

As you may be aware, mental health is an area that is hugely underfunded and NEEDS more resources, awareness and support both in New Zealand and worldwide. So many people are fighting an inner battle that goes unseen, it is not like that person has a broken leg, where everyone can see their pot or crutches. Mental health goes much deeper and often is not discussed or expressed by the sufferer. Over 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in our lifetime.

Having had our own struggles and losing several friends to this terrible illness over the past years, we want to make a difference for those that need the help; even if we only save one person. That is one more cherished person who is still here.

For us, it all starts in London (England). This is where the magic happens. The purchase of a semi reliable vehicle will need to be modified in preparation for the journey across the Channel and beyond. From here the fun really starts. We’ll need to get to Prague (Czech Republic) for the official start line. Joining 300 other teams, we’ll need to figure out the best/quickest/safest way to find the finish line in Ulan-Ude (East Siberia, Russia).

We understand that it might be hard to donate at this time. Another way to support us is by sharing our page through your social media channels.
