Help me fight against family violence!
I’m shaving my hair off for the fight against family violence, in honour and support of all of the survivors and the organisations making a difference.
Every five and a half minutes the New Zealand police record a family violence investigation. This is only 25% of estimated family violence incidents that occur, 75% are NOT reported to the Police!
New Zealand has the worst rates of family violence in the developed world. I am not OK with this, and as a New Zealander I believe it's my responsibility to help do something about it.
Survivors of family violence often rely on the generosity of organisations that provide the support and resources required to give them back their freedom, providing them with a way to move forward. The Women’s Refuge is an incredible organisation that specialises in supporting women and children affected by family violence. They are also loud advocates in the public space, helping to prevent and stop family violence in New Zealand.
I have been so relieved that the New Zealand Government is making reforms to the Domestic Violence Act. However, I know that these reforms will be a great strain on our local Women’s Refuges’ already limited resources. I think it’s integral that we all get behind them and give what we can.
The money raised from this fundraiser will be split between Hutt City Women's Refuge and Wellington Women's Refuge, two local refuges that do incredible things for the Wellington community. Women's Refuge New Zealand (national office) does not have an individual page, but you may be able to find your own local refuge on Givealittle if you'd prefer to donate to them (or if you're extremely generous, do both!)
The smallest donation can make a difference, and I would be utterly grateful for anything that you can contribute.
If you are in Wellington, a fundraiser quiz night is being held on Dec 1st. It will be a great night and my hair will be shaved off during interval. Email me at aliciamcquade1091@gmail.com if you are interested in registering a team.
P.S. I will be donating my hair
It's important that we all stand in solidarity with the victims of family violence. As a New Zealander, I believe it's my responsibility to help make this country safe for everyone.
