  • Final push for more donations

      19 November 2020

I know I said I would do one more update, but with 3 days to go, I am doing one more push to get more donations. Even if it is $5, (the price of a takeaway coffee), it all helps. Please could you share around or ask your work mates.

    Thank you 🥰

  • Why is the Wellington Children's Hospital so special to me?

      10 November 2020
    Main image

Just like Mary Potter Hospice, the Wellington Children's Hospital means a lot to me.

I am fundraising for them because -

    1) The care the Doctors, Nurses, Healthcare assistants, Physiotherapists, Play Specialists have given my son between March 2015 to July 2020. This period included hospital stays, appointments and the overall care for him

    2) To give back to them for their support and care

    3) To fundraise for the new Wellington Children's Hospital

Another reason is that Dr Ross Wilson and Professor Mark Stringer have given my son his life back.

Having severe Ulcerative Colitis, he was on 3 different medications twice a day. Once a month, he had to have IV medication at the hospital. This worked most of the time, but would relapse a few weeks later. His illness caused him to have gastro issues, as well as abdominal pain, anemia, tiredness, skin problems, poor weight and height growth.

When he was unwell, he had to miss school, car trips had to be planned, school trips was a big no and he had to stop playing sport for a club. Something he did for 4 years, playing club soccer in Brisbane and in Wellington for Miramar Rangers and Tawa Football Club. In 2014, he got best player of the team.

Doctor Ross Wilson was incredibly supportive, trying various medications and doses. I wanted to exhaust all non surgical options, but the final straw for me was when I had to inject him fortnightly in the thigh. It was difficult to see him suffer so much, as it was painful for him.

Since his operation, his medication has stopped and his clinic appointments are every six months. His health and well being has improved significantly. As his mother, I can't express how happy I am, to see him thriving again and doing things he loves.

Thank you Doctor Ross Wilson and Professor Mark Stringer for taking great care of my son. Your expertise and support means a lot to me. We will never forget you 💜

  • Why is Mary Potter Hospice so special to me?

      6 November 2020

I want to elaborate more on why I chose Mary Potter Hospice.

As I have mentioned in the main page

    1) The care my grandmother recieved in her final 10 days by the staff

    2) They put each patient first, whether it is in the community or while being cared for in the Inpatient Unit

    3) Mary Potter Hospice needs to raise 7 million each year to keep services free

    4) The demand will only increase as patients in Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti require their special services.

Another reason is the facility. The Inpatient Unit is very similar layout to a hotel, but has extra services like a chapel or a family room.

I clearly remember my Nana asking my grandad on her first night " How much does it cost to stay here" (at the Inpatient Unit). She couldn't believe it when he said nothing.

The family room which I added a photo, was used a lot by the family. With 18 family members wanting to visit, this was a place to hang out in, between taking turns to visit her. It was popular with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, with plenty to do - games, videos, toys, books, colouring in activities.

During Nana's 10 day stay, it was in late January - mid summer. At times we would open the doors to let in fresh air, particularly when her breathing got more difficult. She loved the breeze on her face. Outside her doors, was a patio with chairs and a rose garden (I also added this photo as well). Nana always had a rose garden at her home, so to see this outside her room was special. In between taking turns seeing her, I would often sit here. A few nights I watched the gorgeous sunsets.

At the beginning of life, you want a child to enter a world in a beautiful way. The same is with end of life. We wanted Nana to leave this world with love and care. Mary Potter Hospice delivered this in a facility that is special and meaningful. They did this with the staff, the facility and the support the family recieved during her stay and after when she passed away.

For all of this, I am forever grateful to Mary Potter Hospice.

💕 Thank you Mary Potter Hospice 💕

  • Wellington Children's Hospital

      23 July 2020

Yesterday my son was discharged from the Wellington Children's Hospital, after spending 6 days there. He had to have an operation Saturday and he is now recovering well.

During the 6 days, the nurses and doctors were amazing. I cannot fault them at all.

Because of my son's recent hospital stay, I am more determined to help raise funds for the new Children's Hospital. As well as this Givealittle page, I am coming up with another fundraising idea. I elaborate more about it next month....stay tuned!
