Fundraising for Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust
Otago
*TRIGGER WARNING* ⚠️ (Mentions suicide)
Hi friends,
Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust was made in memory of my good friend Ross Taylor, who tragically lost his life to suicide.
Please join me on my journey as I pledge 1 year of sobriety from alcohol while fundraising to help those dealing with the affects of mental illness, suicidal thoughts/behaviours and the aftermath of suicide.
Ross reached out for help multiple times.
In the days before Ross died, he contacted the emergency services as he had thoughts in his head and he couldn’t sleep.
He was turned away.
Days later he was found dead.
That’s hard to read, I’m sure.
It’s even more gut wrenching to understand that his death was completely preventable.
Suicide is not a choice.
Suicide is an absolute catastrophic, devastating and final symptom of mental distress.
If you have ever been to the place where you genuinely believe the world would be better off without you, you are not alone and I see you.
I was 19 years old when Ross died.
Having just moved to another city all by myself, I had zero support.
Friends didn’t know how to talk to me about his death, and family didn’t understand the depth of what was going on.
Unfortunately, at the time I did not have the life experience or tools to keep myself afloat during such a raw stage of grief. I spiralled mentally - often using alcohol to Band-Aid my emotions, sadness and healing.
This was a lonely space to find myself in, and it took a very long time to pull myself out.
I am now faced with a very interesting irony as I pledge myself off alcohol for a year in hope of supporting others dealing with mental illness or mental distress, and maybe even inspiring another who has been in my situation and used alcohol and/or drugs to cope.
Corinda, Sid and all of Ross’ extended family and friends - this is for you.
This is also for anyone who has ever been negatively affected in any way, shape or form by mental illness or suicide.
Every dollar counts.
If you are not in a position to donate, perhaps take time to think of a friend or family member you haven’t heard from in a while - who you know may be struggling - and pick up the phone.
Thank-you for being a part of my journey ❤️
*In loving memory of our friend Ross, and my uncle Julian.
