The Special Olympics World Games are now over and I would like to thank everybody who donated for your support. The money that was raised here helped send our Wellington club members on the trip of a lifetime and they all did Wellington and New Zealand proud. Three gold medals won by our Wellington athletes were the icing on the cake!

Please check out the Special Olympics Wellington and New Zealand Facebook pages for lots of stories, photos and videos from the games:

  • Nathaniel's Training Update

      14 February 2019

Nathaniel's Wellington basketball coach Sean Aickin has given the following update on his preparations for the world games:

"Nathaniel and I are now training twice a week with the World Summer Games rapidly approaching!

On Tuesday’s we work on basketball skills and drills. These include dribbling at speed, abrupt stopping and direction changes. We are also working on shooting (making sure he shoots from within his range) and getting back into position for defence.

Then on Thursdays we do cardio work which basically involves me jogging and giving him targets to run too. We also work on stretching and spot shooting (shooting from specific spots on the basketball court) and layups.

Nathaniel is keeping up with his exercise diary and is very committed to being ready when the squad assemble to travel to Abu Dhabi."

  • Athletics Team Update

Dom has been gradually increasing his training since the Wellington athletics season started in October. His Dad has been keeping a diary of his times, and they have improved 😁

The team and coaches Dean, Chris, Kate and Ella have been really supportive. Geoff Henry and Brent (athlete Ella's dad) have helped with extra track and speed work.

Following the national training camp in Taranaki, Dom came home very motivated and with a great personal training program. Regular phone calls from the national head coach are keeping that motivation going.

Since Boxing Day Dom has put extra effort into training with extra track sessions and hill runs. He has had lots of support from family and Ricky and Seb. He has also put extra effort into making healthy food choices.

With only three weeks until the team departs for Abu Dhabi, he is really enjoying how his improved fitness has made training more fun.

  • Nearly time!

Once again, thank you to everyone who has donated so far!

We have less than a month until we fly off to the UAE on 4th March, so please share with anyone you can think of to help us get to our target.

I've added a few photos from the final boot camp the NZ football team attended in Mana last weekend. We were all pushed very hard by the coaches but everyone had made a real effort to keep fit over Christmas and it really showed. We'll need to be at our physical peak in the searing heat of Abu Dhabi, so February will be a grueling month of training for all the athletes!

  • Special Olympics World Games Football Update

    Hi all,

Thanks so much to everyone who has donated so far!

The New Zealand World Games football team played our first competitive matches together at a tournament in Auckland in October.

Those were also our last competitive games before the World Games, so thankfully all the players gelled together very quickly and we won the tournament. All the players and coaches are now even more excited about taking on the world in Abu Dhabi.

Some photos of that weekend are now in the gallery – look out for our new supporter, Katie Bowen of the NZ Football Ferns!

    Frank
