We're facing the greatest humanitarian crisis since 1945. Please help these charities giving aid and hope as I go hungry for the starving
Canterbury
As NZ prepares for our annual chocolate festival (Easter), the world faces it’s worst humanitarian crisis since 1945. The United Nations recently announced that over 20 million people are facing famine or a credible risk of famine across South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria and Yemen. This includes 1.4 million children who are suffering from severe acute malnutrition – children silently starving, desperate for our compassion. No one should suffer like this, especially children, but since they are we need to respond.
Aid workers are significantly under-resourced (and risking their lives among conflict) to provide enough food, water, shelter and medical assistance for those in need. To support the work of UNICEF New Zealand, World Vision and Tearfund as they respond to this crisis, I’ve decided to fast for 140 hours (no food, just water and oxygen) from 5 pm, April 5th – 1 pm, April 11th. During this time you might find me dwelling in a tent in Waimate or Timaru. The real agony of starvation, sickness and dehydration that these people are facing will remain foreign to me, but I hope that this challenge will root me deeper in compassion and inspire others to extend a hand as well. Please consider supporting the cause by donating money, learning more, and by sharing this appeal with others. With much gratitude, Ollie.

41 Hours 7 April 2017
Hi everyone, I want to say a huge thank you for the donations and encouragement I've received so far, really blown away! I'm 42 hours in and my stomachs been rumbling away, a bit of extra effort getting up this morning. Only 98 hours to go... This morning I was reminded why this appeal is so important. Reading today's news paper I came across an article titled "Refugees report brutalities" - it described the horrific killings of 17 civilians caught amidst the civil war in South Sudan, the same country where famine has been announced. Roughly 1,700 South Sudanese are fleeing as refugees into Uganda each day, and the aid workers on the ground need all the support they can get to provide the basics: food, water, medicine and hope for the future. For those of us striving to love God and love others, I am also reminded of the words of John the Baptist in Luke 3. The crowds asked him "What then shall we do?" He answered "Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none. Whoever has food is to do likewise." Here in NZ we have an abundant supply of food and possessions, lets consider it a privilege to share with those who really need it. Thanks again, Ollie
