Auckland
Did you know Aotearoa, New Zealand, holds the heartbreaking title of having the highest rate of domestic abuse per capita in the developed world?
On 6th April 2025, I will be running the Waterfront Half Marathon to raise vital funds for Pet Refuge, a remarkable charity that provides safe, temporary accommodation for the pets of those escaping domestic violence.
For families fleeing abuse, leaving behind a beloved pet can be an unbearable choice—and often, a significant barrier to seeking safety. Pet Refuge removes this obstacle, offering not only shelter but also access to veterinary care, enrichment, and training, all free of charge. These services help pets heal alongside their owners, providing comfort and stability during an incredibly traumatic time.
As a survivor of domestic violence myself, this cause is deeply personal. I know firsthand the challenges—and heartache—that come with trying to leave an abusive situation, especially when a beloved pet is involved.
With your support, Pet Refuge can continue its vital work, helping more people and their pets escape abuse and rebuild their lives.
