Support community led forestry projects in Malawi to help combat deforestation & climate change.
Rotorua, Bay Of Plenty
Climate change will continue to have a detrimental impact on health outcomes for people globally, but more so in countries such as Malawi that are already vulnerable to climate injustice.
This was demonstrated by Cyclone Freddy, the longest & strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded, which hit Malawi in March 2023, killing over 1500 & displacing more than 800,000. Climate change impacts have already directly affected Medic to Medic graduates working on the frontlines in Malawi, and will continue to impact the health of those in Southern Africa.
In January 2022, Medic to Medic embarked on an environmental action initiative. We asked our students to put together project proposals for tree planting activities in their communities.
Several students came forward with proposals. These projects have been so successful that we have continued to do tree planting initiatives for the last 3 years, planting over 5760 trees with a survival rate of 73% at 6 months (some student projects were washed away by Cyclone Freddy during 2023).
This year we want to support 5 student projects and help to plant 3270 trees, all for $2000. These projects enable us to work with our students on a shared initiative; students develop leadership roles in their community, projects support piece workers with a small salary & give opportunities for community engagement around deforestation in Malawi. If we raise more, we will donate excess funds to Mount Soche Conservation Trust in Blantyre.
