Dr. Diane Supports Waipuna Hospice

  • I did it!!! 38

    Hello everyone,

It’s been quite a journey. Tonight was 38 times up the Mount. When I started, I wanted to help Waipuna Hospice because I was familiar with the great work that they did. Along the way, I found I also helped myself.

There were times it was difficult. I am still working full time as a physician. Trudging up the Mount at dusk after a full day at work, I almost quit a few times. I am too old, too tired , too aching.Th weather was bad. I had a million reasons not to do it. But, the support of my colleagues and the registrars and house officers, the nurses, and my family and friends kept me going. To all of you, thank you. 🤗🤗🤗.

I walked tonight with a giant (as we would say back in the US “big ass” ) grin on my face. I “high fived” four different people I have passed each time I went up. We have become a community of walkers committed to a common goal, and familiar faces linked by a singlet signifying our quest. To my fellow walkers, well done. To all that supported me, the words thank you are insufficient to express my gratitude.

I wasn’t sure I could do it, but it was definitely worth doing.

    Thank you all,

    Diane

It’s hard to believe it’s almost over. 36 times up now, just two to go. I am so grateful to all those who donated. A big shout out to the registrars and house officers who have been so supportive, I am truly fortunate to work with such an amazing group of young people. The future of medicine is in good hands.

Thanks also to my colleagues for all of their emotional and monetary support, and for those words of encouragement as the go flying by me on the mount. My fellow physicians and the amazing nurses of the Kaupapa ward, your kind words are enough to keep my creaky old knees going.

To My friends and family who have all donated, you are in my heart.❤️❤️

2 more times up the Mount...

I was tired after work and had to bribe myself with a glass of wine later, but so glad I went. The evening light was strong and peaceful. Thanks to all those who donated: doctors, nurses, friends and family. Your support means so much! I’ll be bringing in baked goods on Monday to say thanks.

I was feeling energetic on Sunday, so up 3 times. My Fitbit was quite impressed, my knees somewhat less so. Up again on Monday, in a lovely combination of running shorts and some new hiking boots I’m breaking in. Quite the fashionista 😏

21 times up now. Everyday the view is different. I always take time (to catch my breath) to enjoy the scenery.

Met the group for a Sunday morning March up the mount. It was fantastic to see so many people, young and old (like me, ha), all committed to a common cause. Shout out to the amazing and lovely Gemma McCaw, who floated ( holy crap! The woman is fast!) up and down the Mount, encouraging, chatting, and taking dozens of selfies. Went back up in the evening for 19 ascensions? Halfway there, it’s all downhill, so to speak.

I completed nine times last night. A beautiful evening on the Mount. My knees are protesting a bit so no more jogging the downhills. I have 29 ascensions to go in 34 days. I can do this!
