I plan to become the first person to swim breaststroke the length of Lake Taupo to raise money for breast cancer research.
Waikato
My sister Susan died of breast cancer in March 2017, leaving behind her husband Colin and her son Gabe.
In 2018, I swam breaststroke across Darwin Harbour to raise money for breast cancer research.
I have set myself another challenge - to become the first person to swim breaststroke the length of Lake Taupo. The swim across Darwin Harbour was about 6km, whereas the Lake Taupo swim is just over 40km, so it will be a huge challenge.
There is a reason I want to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand. Susan loved New Zealand. Not long before she died, she had a family holiday there with Colin and Gabe, and she told me afterwards that she enjoyed herself so much that there were moments she forgot she had cancer. So the way I see it, New Zealand gave Susan a beautiful gift, and I would like to give something back to women in New Zealand that are living with breast cancer by raising money to support the work done by the Breast Cancer Foundation.
The swim is 'pencilled in' for the weekend of 8th and 9th February 2020. I am very lucky to have open water swimming legend Philip Rush as my coach, and he will be escorting me on the day of the swim.
I did it! 10 February 2020
Hi everyone, I've got great news! Yesterday, just before midnight, I made it to the northernmost point of Lake Taupo after stepping into the water just after 3.30am at the southern end. That's just over 20 hours. I was utterly exhausted and couldn't stand up, and it is by the far the hardest thing I have ever done. I am very relieved and happy, and pleased to say that fundraising through 'give a little' has tipped over $3,000 thusfar. Thanks so much for your support!
