Support Sands, a non-profit baby loss charity for bereaved families. Let's help break the silence about pregnancy and baby loss in Aotearoa.
Whanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui
Every year in New Zealand, over 600 babies die between 20 weeks' gestation and 12 months of age. On the 28th of August, we lost our baby girl Isobel Cave at 21 weeks, due to severe spina bifida.
We needed to be induced for labour and gave birth at Wellington Hospital not long after; during this confusing and devastating time, we were introduced to Sands New Zealand, a parent-run, non-profit baby loss charity set up to support bereaved parents and families throughout New Zealand.
Leaving the hospital without your baby is one of the most painful moments a parent can face. Talking through these moments with someone who understands can help us feel less alone. Sands not only promotes baby loss awareness but connects you with a local support group to talk through these heartbreaking moments with someone who understands and can help you feel less alone.
On January 12th, I will be taking part in New Zealand's Ocean Swim Series, tackling the 1km open swim in Lake Taupo. I am swimming in memory of our daughter Izzy and raising funds for Sands New Zealand. This is also a chance to raise awareness for all the babies lost too soon and highlight the tremendous work done by Sands around the country.
Any donations will be greatly appreciated!
