Hawke's Bay
The pony tail is coming off and for a great cause. Every year the Y13 student leaders organise a fundraising event where students can participate in a pony tail chop or a full head shave and have 2 weeks to raise money for a charity of their choice. The event takes place at lunchtime in front of the school and is organised completely by the students. Teachers are able to participate and this year I am in! My pony tail will also be donated to make a wig for patients who have lost their hair during treatment.
Earlier this year friends of ours lost their son after a he faced a battle with the big C. A positive young man and talented rugby player lost his battle before his 21st birthday. The Acorn Project Hawkes Bay, supported this family and having worked so closely with students in this age category as a teacher- it is a perfect charity for me to give back to.
The Acorn Project believes that our 12 - 24 year old young people living in Hawkes Bay deserve the opportunity to access the type of cancer support that best suits their needs, which makes them feel visible, empowers them to make decisions / choices about their future and to be given the support needed to share those thoughts and express them. Support is tailored to the individual needs of the member and will include 1-1 face to face Youth Worker support, peer to peer support with other local members, organised drop in sessions, monthly activities, over night camps, small focus group sessions and collaboration with other organisations within the Hawkes Bay community.
