Fundraising for Cure Our Ovarian Cancer - NZ Purposes Fund

Wellington

Ovarian cancer kills twice as many women than die on NZ roads. It's often diagnosed too late because there is no free screening.

School teacher Emma Favel was a busy Wellington mum of four when confronted with stage-3 ovarian cancer, in March 2017. Emma put her symptoms down to midlife changes. Bloating, less appetite, tummy pain. Nothing to worry about. At first.

Emma and husband Kent approached her diagnosis with hope and resolve.

She underwent tough, life-prolonging treatments. So she could watch her son James excel at sports, enjoy her daughters’ special moments and support Kent, Principal of St Marks.

Kent writes, “We were desperate for hope, a wonder drug, a miracle cure. For 5 years Em endured dozens of treatments. But she never had a chance. I watched my darling wife slip away in my arms. Em was only 52.”

In her honour, the family has established Team Emma to help fund ovarian cancer awareness.

If only the symptoms were more widely known and more women received urgent testing. If only Emma had been diagnosed earlier. Emma's oncologist suspected her cancer had been present for 3 years.

Our goal is to raise $100k to help educate women and GP's on the signs of ovarian cancer. So others can survive this silent killer. Because early detection is the best protection.

“Emma was an outstanding Mum, a beautiful person & a talented educator. She always put others first. Please donate to Team Emma and save lives."

Thank you,

Kent, Annabelle 22, Francesca 19, James 14, Pene 17 & whanau

Team Emma stepping up in the Big Apple  8 August 2023

We’re excited to share that twenty two New Zealanders have signed up for this years New York Marathon with ‘Team Emma’ to raise awareness and funds to combat ovarian cancer.

Emma’s family announced a goal to run the New York marathon in her honour at Emma’s funeral in April 2022. They have bonded over a new found passion for running, putting in the miles together - whatever the weather.

Kent and daughters, Annabel, Francesca and Penny will line up with Team Emma members to run or walk the New York Marathon on November 5th. With memories of Emma powering them on. (James and Nanny B will be cheering them on from the sidewalk.)

Team members are paying their own way so every event dollar raised is donated to New Zealand’s Cure Our Ovarian Cancer.

Thank you for your support and kindness in supporting Team Emma’s fundraising so far.

Your wonderful donation will help fund Ovarian Cancer education to boost early detection and save precious lives.

Team Emma will stride through New York like lives depend on it. Kia kaha marathoners!
