Shaving my head for a worthy cause.
Wellington
I’m shaving my head! I’ve always wanted to donate my hair, but it has never been long enough to do it the traditional way, so I’ll shave it off!
What inspired me?
In 2011, I was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease. This brought challenges, including hair loss. Witnessing my hair fall out left me feeling vulnerable. That’s when I realised how much of my identity was tied to my physical appearance. At present my health is stable, but I know hair loss remains a challenge for many lupus patients.
Cancer has impacted my life, affecting close friends and family. I’m aware that for some people losing their hair adds hardship to an already challenging journey. I hope that by donating my hair, someone can benefit from it.
I’ll be shaving and donating my hair in Mexico, in early January. I’m excited to leave a piece of me at home. My husband Matt will also say goodbye to his golden locks.
My aim is to reach $5,000 to support two awesome charities:
Sweet Louise supports New Zealanders with incurable breast cancer, providing practical, emotional, and social care. They aim to help people live as well as possible for as long as possible.
Arthritis NZ Mateponapona Aotearoa provides information, advice and support to people diagnosed with any form of arthritis, something Lupus patients can experience. Arthritis affects over 700,000 New Zealanders and is a leading cause of disability.
