Microplastics pollute our oceans in ways we cannot even imagine. Help us to improve research methods to protect marine life.
Auckland
Every day, more than ten thousand pieces of plastic are discarded into the ocean and billions of tons of plastic litter will eventually end up in the sea. According to recent research, there are currently more than 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste in the ocean alone, polluting the environment and harming our marine life. A fraction of these plastic bottles, bags, cups, and other debris breaks down into microplastics, plastic particles smaller than 5mm, and pose an even greater threat. Such tiny particles are easily mistaken for food by marine life. Not only does this pose a problem for the organism itself, but it also allows the microplastics to enter the food chain, leading to a cascade of devastating impacts on all life on earth, even humans.
Founded in 2014, the Floating Foundation was created with the vision to engage with, and positively impact, the environments and peoples of the South Pacific. To do this, the Floating Foundation seeks to create a mobile platform that enables scientists and charities to operate without the severe logistical barriers faced in the South Pacific, whilst raising awareness and fostering understanding of the incredible environments and unique cultures found in the region.
We will assist in scientific research on the impact of microplastics in the marine environment of the South Pacific.
