  • Thank you all so much!!!!!

    Kia ora everyone.

Well, it's been over a week since the end of the ride. My body has finally stopped thinking it should be getting on a bike each morning and I am settling back into 'regular' life! It's time we closed down this page, so I wanted to thank you so much for your generosity and incredible support along the way. It was an epic trip and you played a big part in making the hard parts easier! To end up more than doubling our fundraising target is amazing. There is an impression out there in some quarters that I Am Hope's government connection has ensured the foundation has plenty of funding, but the model doesn't work quite like that. This impression has had an impact on their overall funding so I am sure your contributions will make a difference to youth and their families on their mental health journey, the same as it did for us. Just as importantly, hopefully this also helped to keep the youth mental conversation at the front of our minds.

Thanks again and all the very best,

  • Day 19 down!!!!

A shorter day for me today. Called it short and stopped at Hokitika tonight. The legs were feeling it after yesterday's workout in the hills. A beautiful ride on the West Coast Wilderness Trail. Incredible scenery and I'll send a few photos. I had a couple of weka keeping me company for lunch and you can see one in a photo. They are really cheeky and when i accidently dropped my empty chicken can on the ground and he grabbed it so quickly and ran off into the bush like lightning! The last beautiful photo is Lake Kaniere, or as the local Pakeha pronounce it.... Lake Canary! A couple of very long days ahead of me though to get to Franz Josef tomorrow and then Haast.

  • Safely to Murchison nearing 2000km…

Kia ora koutou Rode from Richmond to Murchison via Lake Rotoroa today. Got to planned overnight stop at Rotoroa and decided to carry on. My amazing tour manager rearranged my accommodation and now staying at the Lazy Cow guest house in Murchison. It will also help cut down tomorrow's ride to Reefton. Hard to describe how cool today's ride was. Great conditions, great scenery and awesome route. Felt very lucky to be out there. Fun fact from today... rode through Spooners Tunnel this morning. A 1.4km old train tunnel. Originally built in 1891, the tunnel was dug by hand, with two groups of men working at each end to meet in the middle. When they met they were only a few inches out of alignment! It was a crucial connection between Nelson and Glenhope for 79 years. The intention was to eventually link Nelson with the West Coast, but the tunnel was never connected to the national rail network and closed in 1955. It is now part of the Great Taste Cycle trail, which we rode today and yesterday. It is the longest decommissioned rail tunnel in the southern hemisphere and one of the longest 'walk through' tunnels in the world. Definitely need a light because once you're well in it you can't see light in front or behind!

PAUL HAS DONE THE NORTH ISLAND PUSH… wee message he sent us tonight below …we are so proud of you 💜💜💜……

Kia ora whanau. Tucked up 15km from the ferry. Early start tomorrow to catch the 0815 ferry. Great day today. Went through Martinborough and across the Remutaka Ranges Incline which follows an old railway line. It linked Wellington and the Wairarapa built in the 1870s and ran through to the 1950s. NZ's steepest railway and used a system with an extra rail in the middle which special locomotives could grip with their drive systems. Several tunnels to go through and very cool. Looking forward to the South Island.
