WAISWIM13 Waikato River Swim 320km in 10 days

  • Update for 23/01/2013

      23 January 2013

Hi all. After further research, and a sobering chat with the only perosn to swim the Waikato before, I (and my wife) have decided to postpone the swim; I need more time to prepare, and also more time to actually do the swim - my plan of 10 to 12 days is way too ambitious. Thanks for all those who donated and supported. This goes onto my bucket list.

Had one of those training sessions on Saturday which made me question this whole idea! 10km swim in Lake Taupo, of which the first 9km were fine. The last kilometre was a grovel. I think the problem was I was dehydrated - you don't think of that when swimming (and surrounded by water) that your are sweating and loosing fluids. After 3hours your body is quite parched.

Been swimming a lot in Lake Taupo - the temperature is just right. Normal training swim is about 5km, sometimes twoing my boat (bodyboard with a tray mounted on it to carry some basic kit). Only had one run in with a jetski so far! Orca have come on board and provided me with another wetsuit and some goggles - thanks Erin.

Done a few training swims in Lake Taupo now - lake temperature up to 14C which isn't too bad. My Orca Sonar wetsuit keeps the body warm , just the head which suffers.

Hi. Late October 2012 and Lake Taupo is still too cold to swim in (12C). Getting tired of the pools and keen to hit some open water; this weekend I may have to brave it. The first 100metres is the worst - as soon as the head goes numb its no problem.
