  • Day 50: Routeburning through the km’s

      8 January 2025
    Main image

    Kia ora all,

A brief stop in Queenstown and then I’m back on trail! The official Te Araroa route goes through the Greenstone valley down through the Mavora Lakes, but I’m taking a detour along the famed Routeburn Great Walk, camping partway through. Spirits are high and the legs feel great, so I’m seriously looking forward to the next week or so in the bush. Plenty of extra huts to bag too…

    See you in Te Anau!

    Cheers, James

    Kia ora all,

I’ve just left Wānaka and am on my way up and over the Motatapu track to Queenstown. The past week has been full of stunning weather, sandflies, and plenty of food. Looking forward to the next stretch! Enjoy a photo from the Mt Melinda Ridge Track between Ōhau and Hawea; I’ll put some more up the next time I’m in cell service.

    Thanks for all the donations!

  • Day 39: Merry Christmas from Twizel!

      26 December 2024

Hey everyone! Big last couple weeks - I’ve had to come off trail for gastro to Christchurch, recovered and head back to trail. I’ve hutbagged in the Hakatere Conservation Park, seen Sir Ed’s signature in a hut, visited one of NZ’s oldest huts (built 1861!) and had a wonderful last few days coming into Lake Tekapo, then biking to Twizel. It’s great to see the donations continuing, even closer to the end goal. I’m taking a 0 for Xmas, spending a few days doing some off-trail side tracks over the new year with friends; hopefully I’ll be back on Te Araroa come eaaarly January. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday period and best wishes from me 🎄🎉

The photo is myself, a few other hikers and the awesome trail angels Rob and Kaz who put us up over Christmas - massive thanks from me!

  • Day 29: Arthur’s Pass (500km down!)

      11 December 2024
    Main image

    Hey everyone,

Long time between updates but I’ve just reached Arthur’s Pass, which marks 500km total walked so far! Although the last few days have been particularly wet I’ve had a great near-month on trail. The Richmond Ranges and Nelson Lakes have been highlights and I’d thoroughly recommend them to anyone wanting to hike a section of the trail. Enjoy the picture attached of a couple Kea on the Deception river this morning :)

The next bit of Te Araroa takes me over the Black Range to Lake Coleridge, before detouring around the mighty Rakaia river. Make sure to follow me over on Instagram (or eventually, Youtube).

Cheers and thanks again for the donations!

    Hey everyone,

Just about to head into the Richmond Ranges for the next 9ish days which will mean I’ll be without cell service for that duration. Heavy pack with 9 days of food! Weather looks great so am very much looking forward to it :)

    Cheers

  • Day 5: Resting in Havelock

      17 November 2024
    Main image

Kia ora, just come off the Queen Charlotte and link track from Anakiwa to Havelock. It’s been a great few days on trail, with plenty of stunning views and nice people met - even a cool opportunity to watch the ABs today in the QC tavern! It’ll be radio silence from me over the next week or so as I head into Pelorus to start the strenuous Richmond Ranges section of Te Araroa. I’ve really enjoyed getting the donation reminders to keep me motivated so thanks on that front :)

  • Day 1: On the Queen Charlotte

      13 November 2024
    Main image

Just a brief update from me - I’m off! (when my water taxi gets here)

I start on the Queen Charlotte Track today for the next few days, having spent the night in Picton. I’ve also sent a couple of Resupply boxes forwards to greet me in St Arnaud and Arthur’s Pass :)

Thanks to everyone’s generosity I’ve also had to bump the donation total up a bit, which is pretty awesome!

    Cheers

    James

Hey everyone, thanks for the support so far! It’s been awesome seeing the donations come in even before I’ve started.

This morning I flew to Welly and am currently heading into the city to pick up some last minute supplies before the ferry to Picton. Beautiful conditions here, although the forecast for the next few days is not so promising…

Just a reminder if you want to follow along I’ll be posting on Instagram and Youtube:
