My name is Luke Johnson and I'm walking the 1300km South Island Te Araroa Trail, raising money for the Halberg Disability Sports Foundation.
Otago
I am walking down the Te Araroa Trail, which is a continuous walking trail that stretches from Cape Reinga in the North, to Bluff in the South. Unfortunately due to the length of my university holidays I have only time to complete the South Island portion of the trail. It will be the longest and hardest expedition of my life and I expect to be walking for around 60 days (2 months!), starting in early December. I am doing this walk to raise awareness and support for the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation.
The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation is a charitable organisation that aims to enhance the lives of physically disabled New Zealanders by enabling them to participate in sport and recreation.
So many of the things we do, we take for granted. By supporting this charity you provide the opportunity for young disabled athletes to do things and participate in activities they never dreamed they would be able to do.
I was introduced to this charity though my high school, where I attended and volunteered at many sporting days for those with impairments. The kids attending these events were all having a blast and I feel proud to support a charity that facilitates events such as these. With your support we can help change the lives of physically disabled young New Zealanders and provide them with the social benefits that sport and recreation provide.
In the words of Sir Murray Halberg - "All sports for all New Zealanders - No Exceptions"
I have personally seen how the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation supports those with disabilities and am proud to support them. I think it is only fitting that I spend my free time doing something I enjoy (tramping) to raise money so other less fortunate people can have the chance to do the same.
