    SAT 13 FEB | KAINUI VINEYARD | KERIKERI | 12pm-7pm

Any donations to help cover the costs of this donation-only, fun event for the community would be gratefully received.

We're back! And this year we have THREE supercool headline bands for you... We're delighted to welcome back the fun and funky HIPSTAMATICS and STRANGELY AROUSING with their reggae/ska vibe. And we're thrilled to have dynamic, entertaining folk trio, ALBI & THE WOLVES joining us too!

Before ALL that, we've invited The Magic Playhouse to open the event with their wonderful kids show 'MAGIC IN THE BUSH' at midday. The main stage opens at 1pm.

Far North Summer Sounds is all about whanau, fun, great tunes and lots of dancing. All we ask in return is a koha entry donation of $5 (kids are free!) and a warm smile. We'll have yummy food stalls, great childrens' entertainment and the beautiful summery setting of Kainui Vineyard. We hope you, your friends and whanau can join us!

With a huge THANK YOU to our sponsors, Far North District Council, LJ Hooker Kerikeri and Creative Communities for making this event possible. As always, we are low on the amount of funding we need and would appreciate any donations through Give A Little to cover the costs of this affordable and fun community event.

This event is organised voluntarily and hosted by BE FREE Inc, supporting a Drug-Free Bay of Islands. If any extra money is raised during Far North Summer Sounds it will go towards running our free 'Mentoring through Music' Programme.

HELP US GIVE FAR NORTH KIDS A RARE CHANCE TO SHINE...

Our Battle of the Teen Bands 2020 is coming back to the Turner Centre for the third year running due to high demand! This exciting competition, taking place in the main auditorium, is open to young bands up to the age of 19 (at the time of registration) who live anywhere between Kawakawa and Cape Reinga.

We rely entirely on funding to run our events and keep our weekly Mentoring through Music Youth Programme FREE to the kids. Any funds we raise up until September 11th 2020 will help us to meet our funding goals for Battle of the Teen Bands, and give the region's kids a rare chance to appear on a big stage in front of a large audience.

  • We made an album!

      2 June 2020

Welcome to our first Be Free Youth music compilation, recorded by students from our free Mentoring Through Music Programme, both past and present.

You’ll find a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, funk, rock, metal and even classical, because we encourage our youth to explore all kinds of music and broaden their horizons.

At the same time, they barely notice they are also being taught kindness, collaborative skills, strength, self-confidence, how to build strong friendships, and how to be comfortable in their own skin.

  • Battle of the Bands

Be Free held an awesome Battle of the Bands event at The Turner Centre in September, with participation from Kawakawa to Kaitaia. The standard of music was astounding and our judges had a very difficult time. Prizes donated by the community included professional recording, photography and music video for the winners, and cash prizes for the runners up and People's Choice winners.

Click to watch the music video of the winning band, 'Anon', who received an invitation to open a local festival as a result.
