Right now is a critical time to focus on children’s health and wellbeing, and their futures. We need funds to recruit and train mentors.
Right now is a critical time to focus on children’s health and wellbeing, and their futures.
Loneliness, stress, and social isolation can be difficult for all of us, but vulnerable families and children suffer the most. In fact, many children and young people are now facing increased adversities in their homes.
Be there for kids when they need you the most by placing a caring BBBS mentor in their life. Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to maintaining and supporting the vital mentoring relationships we create in order to fight the social isolation of our most vulnerable youth.
Big Brothers Big Sisters are serving youth and their families every day and it is only possible with your support.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawke's Bay matches children facing adversity (aged 6 - 12 years) with volunteer mentors. We believe every child should have the opportunity to reach his or her full potential, both as individuals and people – that by doing so, they will not only do well, they will also do good.
By changing the course of young lives we can in turn be changing the course of a community’s future. Serving as role models, our mentors teach by example the importance of giving and giving back, of staying in school, and of having respect for family, peers and community. Each time we match a child with a mentor we start something incredible – a life-changing relationship built on friendship, trust and empowerment.
BBBS mentoring program provides provides girls and boys with a role model and a friend to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with. Through regular outings, a relationship is developed between the mentor and the mentee that is built on trust and common interests, and is supported by our experienced case-workers. The result is a life-changing experience for both the mentor and the mentee. The program strives to do the following:
• provide a role model and a friend.
• promote the importance of staying in school and healthy relationships with family and peers.
• instil trust and self-confidence in order to make healthy decisions.
• encourage leadership skills and independent thinking.
• and above all, make a difference while having fun.
Whether it’s in the form of time or money there is no more important investment we as individuals can make than in helping our nation’s children realise – and share – their full potential. Thank you for your support in helping that child to raise their head to face the world with a smile on their face.
More about us
Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawke's Bay offers a one-on-one mentoring programme to 'at risk' children aged between 6 - 12 years. We recruit, interview, referee check and police vet volunteer mentors. Once a mentor has been cleared we train, then match them with a child. Mentors meet with the child weekly for a minimum of one year. Children who are mentored are less likely to start using drugs or drink alcohol, and they are less likely to play truant from school. Children become more confident, gain self esteem, and develop positive attitudes towards their future. A primary early prevention mentoring programme has proved to be an effective way in reducing the risk of children getting involved in crime.

We recently matched Craig & Adam and already they're 'hitting' it off! Craig's comments from their first outing - "We had such an awesome time we started off with a hot chocolate and a walk down Marine Parade, mini-golf was a hit and Adam got his first hole in one🏌️. This is really awesome!"
Adam's mum had positive things to say about the match too!🥰
