  • Become a Mentor - Ignite Youth Potential

      27 April 2021

Community-based mentoring helps young people to increase their confidence, develop a greater sense of belonging, and aspire to greatness. The majority of the young people who come through the Big Brothers Big Sisters programme are looking for positive adult role models outside of their existing support structures.

A young person aged 6-11 is matched with an adult volunteer based on personality, shared interests, and geographic location. Once a week, for a minimum of a year, the mentor meets with the young person to spend time together – cooking, going to the beach, playing sport – the possibilities are endless.

Community-based mentoring through the Big Brothers Big Sisters model is proven to make a lasting, positive impact in the life of a young person.

WANT TO IGNITE POTENTIAL IN A YOUNG PERSON'S LIFE?

    BECOME A MENTOR

Daniel and Elijah are our newest match here in Hawke's Bay. They're looking forward to hanging out together, shooting some hoops, and getting to know one another more. Elijah is well known for his conversational skills and no doubt will keep Daniel on his toes with his curious nature & inquisitive questions. Wishing them lots of fun & adventure on their BBBS journey together.

We recently matched Craig & Adam and already they're 'hitting' it off! Craig's comments from their first outing - "We had such an awesome time we started off with a hot chocolate and a walk down Marine Parade, mini-golf was a hit and Adam got his first hole in one🏌️. This is really awesome!"

Adam's mum had positive things to say about the match too!🥰

Over the month of June we ran a marketing campaign across news print, radio, billboard and social media which proved very successful - resulting in an influx in new mentor enquiries. We have been working hard to formalise new matches and at our Laserforce group outing last week we were able to see just how much we've grown! It was heartwarming and very rewarding to see so many of our matches together in the one place and having so much fun!

If you're thinking of becoming a volunteer, here's another great reason why you should...volunteering has "spillover effects" so when you volunteer as a mentor not only are you being a positive role model for a young person but you're goodwill benefits the community as a whole!

Give Up Coffee on Fridays and Invest in a brighter future for a Hawke's Bay child.

Our mentoring model offers young people in need of support an opportunity to learn social, emotional and life skills through exposure to positive modelling by their volunteer mentor.

On average, it costs approximately $5 per day (about the same as a takeaway coffee), or $1800 per year, to make and sustain a Big & Little match.

Every $5 you donate ensures that our Big & Little matches will remain strong and supported for another day further.

Go coffee free on Fridays and donate here!

If you want to set up a regular donation (weekly or monthly) to BBBS, sign into your Givealittle Account and you can create a regular donation/GiveaLittle plan, via your bank account, or recurring Card payments.

  • Supporting our youth during Covid-19

Distance cannot beat connection. It is more important now than ever to be supporting our young people. Our mentors are still maintaining regular contact (contactless) with their mentees, and we are actively recruiting new mentors for the growing demand we are seeing of children needing support from a safe adult outside their family circle. In order to continue this valuable service we are actively seeking donations to support the longevity of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Hawke's Bay.
