Boost Bougainville

To boost the morale of post-conflict communities in Bougainville by supporting and promoting child and youth learning and development.

Waikato

Bougainville was home to the largest open-pit copper mine in the world during the 1970s. Bougainville Copper Limited was a joint venture between Conzinc-Rio Tinto and the PNG Government. During its operation, landowner interests and concerns were neglected which resulted in a series of events that triggered the Bougainville Civil War. This war lasted over a period of over 10 years during which over 10% of the Bougainville population was lost i.e. about 20,000 people.

There is a cross-section of Bougainville society today between the ages of about 25 to 40 years old referred to as the “Lost Generation”. These are people who failed to receive a safe and stable childhood and/or proper education, health and employment opportunities during and as a result of the Civil War. They have lost their way and this has caused many developmental and social issues within communities today particularly with regards to women, children and youth.

Boost Bougainville's mission is to restore morale within these post-conflict communities by supporting and promoting child and youth learning and development. Boost Bougainville intends to achieve this by supplying schools and youth with books, sports equipment and uniforms, bicycles and other items to promote and aid learning. Monetary donations to transport donated items, build and restore classrooms and other school facilities are also welcome.
