Dunedin, Otago
The Dunedin Youth Orchestra has been active for 50 years with its core function being to provide local young orchestral musicians (aged under 25 years) with a high-quality musical outlet and opportunities for their further development.
This year, our young musicians aged 14 - 25 years will be joining the Christchurch Youth Orchestra for a concert to be held at the Dunedin Town Hall which comes at the cost of at least $9000 for one day. This doesn't include the costs of lighting, sound, transport of percussion instruments via a truck, advertising etc.
Preparation for the concert includes 10 weekly rehearsals and a weekend workshop where the players are tutored by members of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.
The upcoming semester 2 concert will feature soloists from Young Musician Award winners Rose Stevenson and Ellen Walters. The winning composition from the annual Audrey Reid Composition Award will also be premiered. Joining together with the Christchurch Youth Orchestra provides opportunities for the players to collaborate, socialise and create a memorable performance that will also benefit the wider Dunedin community.

The Dunedin Youth Orchestra is Dunedin’s premier amateur orchestra for young classical musicians aged between 14 - 25. The orchestra has provided an excellent training ground for instrumentalists to develop their orchestral skills since 1972.
