Dwell Housing Trust provides affordable, quality housing for people in need or on a low income in the Wellington region.
Wellington
Dwell is a leader in housing innovation and mixed communities (social housing and shared equity for first home buyers), and we have been building homes for 10 years. We want to supply more homes for our community and we are currently working towards our next build project - 19 apartments in Wellington for social housing.
Support Dwell to help us continue to provide for our community in need. Our community housing model is a proven one. As has been shown internationally, the community housing sector is a successful way of increasing the supply of low-cost housing. Big or small any support for our work has an impact.
We want to create a pipeline of new build projects
• We want to build 20 homes per year for the next five years.
• We can borrow up to 70% of the cost of each project.
• We need to raise 30% of the cost of each project.
• We need $4 million for each project every year.
• Every donation helps us reach this target.
• For every dollar given to Dwell, we bring another $2.
How great is housing need in Wellington
As at 30 September 2020, 1894 households were on the Ministry of Social Development’s social housing register for the Wellington region (Wellington City, Lower Hutt City, Upper Hutt City, and Porirua).
15.4% of people in Porirua and 11.6% of people in Wellington City live in crowded households.
The 2018 Census showed around 20,000 Wellingtonians pay an annual market rent for a two-bedroom home that is more than half their income.
Dwell Housing Trust provides affordable, quality housing for people in need or on a low income, and whose housing needs are not being met by other housing providers in the Wellington region. We are more than a landlord - we ensure our tenants have access to the support they need to live well, do well and be well.
We provide a range of housing services including social housing, supported housing for people experiencing mental illness, shared living for single people, and general needs affordable rental (below market) housing.
Dwell became operational in 2013 following the merger of Wellington Housing Trust and Mahora House Incorporated, who between them had more than 50 years experience in community housing. We carry on their great work in solving the housing crisis in the Wellington region.
