We're asking for help to channel Nelson's amazing community spirit into practical support for the people who need it most.
Nelson / Tasman
In Nelson, nearly one in three children are living in poverty. That’s around 6000 children, right on our doorstep. For their parents, life is stressful, and the task of meeting basic needs can be overwhelming.
These numbers, as well as some of the stories we’ve heard about families struggling along without basic items, led us to set up Helping Families Nelson in 2018. Our volunteer-run charity helps local families going through a tough time, by providing clothing, toiletries and household items that we collect from donors around the region.
As everyone is aware, life is very hard and stressful for a large number of Kiwi families, and this has only increased in the last two years. Some of these families are now having to reach out for help, when they haven't needed to in the past. And now we’re asking for yours.
What we need:
Helping Families is still growing rapidly, and so is our client base. We're working hard to keep up with demand and are working closely with as many agencies as we can. All funds donated will go straight back into the community, buying necessities like toiletries, baby essentials like nappies and formula, new socks and undies, bedding and filling any other gaps in our stock.
We're always open to your ideas, suggestions and offers of help. And if you or your family are struggling, please get in touch.

After seeing a real need for clothing for children uplifted from their homes and placed into care with nothing, we came up with the idea for Helping Families: a way to support local families with some of the essentials required for raising small humans, so they can thrive and reach their full potential. To do this, we collect donations and distribute them to the people who most need it.
