We're asking for help to channel Nelson's amazing community spirit into practical support for the people who need it most.
In Nelson, nearly one in three children are living in poverty. That’s around 6000 children, right on our doorstep. For their parents, life is stressful, and the task of meeting basic needs can be overwhelming.
These numbers, as well as some of the stories I’ve heard about families struggling along without basic items, led me to set up Helping Families Nelson. Our volunteer-run charity helping local families going through a tough time, providing clothing, toiletries and household items that we collect from donors around the region.
Figures show that each year, more struggling families are asking for help. And now we’re asking for yours.
What we need:
Helping Families is growing very rapidly, and so is our client base. We're working hard to keep up with demand. All funds donated will go straight back into the community, buying necessities like food or grocery vouchers, baby essentials like nappies and formula, and any gaps in our stock.
We're always open to your ideas, suggestions and offers of help. And if you or your family are struggling, please get in touch.

More about us
After seeing a real need for clothing for children uplifted from their homes and placed into care with nothing, we came up with the idea for Helping Families: a way to support local families with some of the essentials required for raising small humans, so they can thrive and reach their full potential. To do this, we collect donations and distribute them to the people who most need it.
